The first night of the season saw several missed opportunities for a perfect score. The first was available for the taking in the match between the Mounties (It’s Time Grill & Pub - previously known as Monte’s) and the Screaming Eagles of Shenanigans. Dan Meinholtz and Mary Humphrey were perfect for seven of the eight frames. However, Clarence Bierman and Dean Disch held them to just 5 points in the sixth frame. Dean and Dan also displayed some game of their own losing only two frames all night. The Mounties hung on to take this one by 18.

With a change of venue from Blue Mounds to Verona by last year’s Hooterville-Shufflers, the now 5th Quarter-Shufflers jumped into a 49-point lead over Kleeman’s after six frames. The Hay-Shakers wanted no part of the thrashing being handed to them and shook out a perfect round in the seventh frame. Shufflers Derek Skogen and Steve Vogt had a good shot at a perfect night but lost the last two frames by 1 and 12 points respectively. With their help, the Shufflers managed to finish the night with a 23-point victory.

Blue Mounds saw a tight match between the Hooterville-Express and the S’wisco Taphaus Cheese-Eaters (previously known as New Glarus or Sportsman’s Bar & Grill). The Express managed to generate just enough steam to force the Cheese-Eaters off the Express 13 points short of a win. In Pine Bluff another close match was taking place. With the Pipe-Benders leading by 36 points at the half, the J&M Bar River-Rats took control of the wrenches and cranked as hard as they could in the opposite direction until they had Jones’ Plumbing in a 9-point deficit. The Rats were elated to win the first week out after losing their first 10 matches last year.

Speaking of Jones’ Plumbing, this week’s high score of 114 was shared by Jerome Krantz and Tiny Zander of Jones’ Plumbing and Harold Schlimgen and Ferdie Schmitz (Norsk Cowboys). Jones’ Plumbing also gave up this week’s low score. Kent Arneson and John Ott could only put 81 points in the Pipe-Benders tool box, while Jerry Retrum and Dean Herfel (Shenanigans) were able to sneak out 83 points, barely keeping them off the bottom. Unfortunately, this was not the case for the Shenanigan-Pranksters as they gave up the largest margin of victory this week to the Norsk Cowboys as the Cowboys out flanked Shenanigans by a whopping 65 points. All the Cowboys were able to break 100, while only two prankster couples managed that feat.

Standings: 5th Quarter 1-0; Hooterville Express 1-0; It’s Time 1-0; J&M Bar 1-0; Norsk 1-0; Jones’ Plumbing 0-1; Kleeman’s 0-1; Eagle Heights 0-1; S’wisco Taphaus 0-1; Shenanigans 0-1.

Schedule for October 12: Hooterville @ Kleeman’s (8:00); 5th Quarter @ S’wisco Taphaus (8:00); It’s Time @ Norsk Golf Club (7:30); J&M Bar @ Eagle Heights (8:00); Shenanigans @ Jones’ Plumbing (8:00).
