2017, The Year in Review: May through July for Monticello

The 2017 Monticello Junior Prom, "A Night of Rustic Elegance," was held on Saturday, April 29, 2017. The Prom Court included: Veronica Blumer escorted by Nicholas Blumer, Brandi Sarbacker escorted by Isaac Smith, Ivy Walters escorted by Austin Blumer, Erin Lehr escorted by Travis McCoy, Katelyn Thompson escorted by Evan Siegenthaler and Cory Bauman, Courtney Kammes escorted by Braden Gafner, Callisa Briggs escorted by Jon Errthum, Peter Blumer and Bailey Faber, Alaya Hummel escorted by Kaleb Shulka and Karl Schwoerer and Kyle Walters. Cory Bauman and Erin Lehr were crowned Prom King and Queen.


Members of the Monticello H.S. FCCLA chapter gathered on May 3, 2017, to celebrate their accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year. Receiving the award for the outstanding member of the year was Claire Klossner.

The Wisconsin FFA Foundation awarded nearly $30,000 in post-secondary scholarships to 40 Wisconsin FFA members from 32 chapters.

Monticello students participated in a Community Day of Service on Friday, May 12th. After all of their hard work, they enjoyed a cookout at the school.

Relentless rain and chilly temperatures forced the cancellation of some of the events planned for Spring Fling on Saturday, May 20, 2017. The Monticello Fire Department still held their Annual Pig Roast and the music went on in the Village Park.


On Saturday, May 27, 2017, the Commencement Ceremony for the Monticello School District Class of 2017 was held in the Rehmstedt Gym.

The Monticello Foundation awarded nine scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to Karlene Walters, Rachel Love, Brie Graber, Madalyn Holtz, Jessie Garrison, Megan Lehr, Marissa Peterson, Chandler Hansen and Brittany Disch. The scholarships were awarded at the Senior Banquet held May 25th. The 23 students in this class received a total of over $163,000 in scholarships!

In a special Monticello Village Board meeting, held on Thursday, May 25, the board appointed Szvon Conway as new Police Chief for the village.

The Monticello School District offered a huge thank you to Angela (Babler) Neff, owner of New Glarus Bakery and 1994 graduate of Monticello High School. Angela made a generous donation to Monticello Schools to cover negative lunch balances for students.

Fourth and fifth graders in Green County were invited to participate in the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom essay contest. There were 69 local entries turned in for this year's contest that focused on "Cranberry Production in Wisconsin During One of the Four Seasons." Sadie Wilkins, fourth grader from Monticello Elementary School, won second place. On behalf of Green County Farm Bureau, $150.00 was issued to the classroom of the 1st place winning essay, $100.00 to the classroom of the 2nd place essay and $75.00 to the classroom of the 3rd place essay. In addition to the three winners, Insight FS sponsored a $50 gift card for each teacher to purchase items for the classroom for having their entire class participate in the essay contest. The following teachers encouraged their entire classroom to participate in this year's essay contest: Mrs. Figi, Monticello Elementary School, Monticello; and Mrs. Richter, Monticello Elementary School.

Lindsey Pence was crowned the 2017-2018 Monticello Dairy Queen.


Shortly after 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 28th, the Green County Sheriff's Department began receiving calls about damage that had been done by a strong thunderstorm, located approximately three miles south of the Village of Monticello, on State Highway 69. On Thursday, June 29th, the National Weather Service toured the area and confirmed that two EF1 tornadoes had touched down.

The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research announced that Kathleen Grossen is the 2017 Outstanding CSR of the Year recipient for the state of Wisconsin.

Monticello graduating senior Jessie Garrison participated in the 2017 WFSCA All-Star Game on June 13th, at The Woodside Sports Complex in Wisconsin Dells. 

The Monticello School District held the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2017 on Saturday May 27, n the Rehmstedt Gym.

Monticello Community Club Celebrated its 80th Birthday at Homecoming held July 6th through the 9th. Through the years the Club has contributed to the development and improvement of Lake Montesian, the village park, ball diamond and new basketball court, the octagon shelter house, the depot, the pool, the village playground equipment, and many other projects in the Village of Monticello, as well as to fund scholarships for local graduates.

The Monticello School District is again the recent recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Wisconsin Technology Initiative to help reduce the financial barriers of integrating instructional technology into the Technology Education classroom.

Sarah Blumer earned a gold medal at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN, while Claire Klossner earned a silver medal.

Blue Lake International Exchange Program offered Monticello Middle and High School the opportunity to host Big Band and Choir of Markgraefler Gymnasium Muellheim, September 11-15, 2017.
