What do financial literacy, the State of Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), community partners, Belleville High School Marketing students and Belleville Elementary students have in common? The answer is, the "Big Read."

Department of Financial Institutions Secretary Jay Risch was the celebrity reader for the "Big Read" at Belleville Elementary school on Thursday, April 26th. Secretary Risch read aloud to over 100 elementary students the book Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts, a story that promotes smart spending and knowing the difference between needs and wants. Following the "Big Read," students from Eric Farrar's Marketing class went to individual classrooms and taught a lesson they created on how to be smart with their money.

The School District of Belleville would like to extend a special thank you to the partners who have made this event possible: CBM Credit Education founder Bill Wilcox and his wife, Julie Porto, for sponsoring our celebrity reader and making it possible for each student to receive a free book and parent guide; Diane O'Connor and Jessica Butenhoff with UB&T for donating a bank to each student; and Rick Francois from Francois Ford for donating a quarter for each student to begin filling their bank. Thank you for your continued partnership with the School District of Belleville and your commitment to the "Big Read" and the students of Belleville!

Smart Money Week is a public awareness campaign created in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, designed to help young people better understand and develop money management skills.
