Rock Out! Discover Wisconsin's Geological History at New Glarus Woods State Park

June 21, 2018

Join libraries from across Green County, along with the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park, for an evening of family fun on Saturday, June 23, from 4:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m., at the New Glarus Woods State Park, W5446 County Highway NN, New Glarus. Activities, including a story stroll and arts and crafts, will be available from 4:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. There will also be opportunities for quiet reading and trail walking. A presentation by Brooke Norsted of the University of Wisconsin – Madison Geology Museum will take place from 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. “Stories from Stones” will provide attendees with an opportunity to travel through time and discover the unexpected history of Wisconsin’s geological past including volcanoes, tropical seas, and Mastodons! Families are encouraged to bring picnic dinners to the park. Attendees who do not have a 2018 Wisconsin State Parks sticker can receive free admission by showing a Wisconsin library card at the ranger station, starting at 4:30 p.m.

This year’s Summer Reading Program theme, “Libraries Rock,” brings a wide range of programming to libraries in Green County. While most programs focus on music, the theme encourages patrons to explore geology and other natural sciences.

“We are excited to provide an opportunity to learn more about how our beautiful landscape was created and paint a picture of what our part of Wisconsin may have looked like thousands of years ago,” said Angela Noel, Library Director at Brodhead Memorial Public Library.

“The Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park are excited by the collaboration with the libraries of Green County, as it offers an opportunity to attract a broad range of visitors to the park. We hope to welcome many newcomers to discover the beauty of a state park that is right here in Green County,” said Beth Blahut, Co-President of the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park.

For more information on programs happening this summer, contact any Green County Library, Albany, Belleville, Brodhead, Monroe, Monticello, and New Glarus, or visit www.newglaruswoods.org.
