Herbert Kubly Retrospective

Sunday, April 26, marks the 100th anniversary of New Glarus author, playwright, professor, and world traveler, born on the family farm, 1.5 miles east of New Glarus.
Kubly holds the distinction of being the first Wisconsin writer to win the National Book Award, in 1956, for his first book, <i>American in Italy</i>. This award was presented to him by his good friend, then Senator John F. Kennedy.

Tschudy to Present Program on Carl Marty

Carl Marty Sr. was a compelling figure who lived a life that had affected and helped shape the history of Monroe.
His life will be the subject of a program presented by Green County historian Kim Tschudy in the Turner Hall Grand Ballroom on Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 13-17, 2015

Tornado sirens will be tested on Thursday, April 16, during the state-wide tornado drill. The National Weather Service will issue a mock tornado watch at 1:00 p.m.; at 1:45 p.m., a mock tornado warning will be issued. Locally, tornado sirens will be activated at 1:45 p.m., for the City of Monroe, Juda, Browntown, Albany, South Wayne, New Glarus and Monticello. The City of Brodhead will not be testing their siren at this time. The mock tornado drill watch/warning will end at 2:00 p.m. If there is inclement weather that day, the drill will be on Friday, April 17.

Music Scholarships

Stateline Music Foundation is offering scholarship aid awards for high school seniors graduating in 2015 who will enroll in a college curriculum in music and who reside or attend high school in Rock, Green and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, and Jo Daviess, Carroll, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, DeKalb, Whiteside and Lee counties in Illinois. The graduating senior may be presently attending a public high school or be homeschooled. The school in which the student intends to study may either be a two-year community college or a four-year university program.

Monroe Arts Center has a long-standing custom of pairing elegant cuisine and fine wines along with lively entertainment at their signature fundraiser – A Taste of Spring.  This year’s event on May 4 will be no exception, when Chef Sarah Jarret brings her culinary talents to the table for a savory evening featuring an eclectic five-course dinner.
Espanole, aioli, gremolata.  Foodies will relish the concept of cooking terms coming to life in the stocks, sauces, and condiments that are part of the menu.

Dig Into Reading Event at the Belleville Public Library

The kids loved getting up close to construction equipment at Belleville Public Library's Dig Into Reading event on Saturday, April 11th. A big thanks to Dave Nolden of Harold's Excavation, Casey Funseth of Bobcat of Janesville, and Tom O'Connor from Belleville's Public Works department for bringing the cool equipment.

New Glarus Area EMS Celebrated 40th Anniversary

New Glarus Area EMS celebrated 40 years of service to the people of the area on Saturday, April 11, with an Open House.
It was a beautiful afternoon for everyone who stopped in to thank the Emergency Technicians and Drivers for their hard work and dedication. There were also plenty of refreshments to enjoy. Local businesses and individuals helped make the celebration possible with donations.
