Farmers of the Sugar River to Hold Seminar

The economic forecast for farmers to make a profit this year is bleak and concerning. There are conservation practices that can be used to reduce costs and improve yield. If a farmer can no till this year’s crop, they will not only save money on fuel, labor and time inputs, but it will allow the soil to retain its structure that includes air, earthworm holes and roots from the previous crop, therefore better suited to infiltrate water. Planting cover crops is another conservation practice that farmers use to build organic matter in their soils, which retains water like a sponge.

Naturally Speaking

Birds have two legs but some species commonly stand on just one leg, usually to rest or warm the other one.
Recently, when an immature Eagle flew to an Elm tree, it perched and then raised its right leg and tucked the foot under the lower breast feathers for a time.  At that moment, the air temperature was hovering near zero.
The Eagle had no problem repositioning itself on the small limb and leaned a bit to the left to adjust its center of gravity and balance, as Canada Geese are seen doing while standing on ice.

Sugar River Euchre

A train robbery gone bad. That’s what the Norsk Cowboys stumbled through last Thursday night when their attempt to rob the Hooterville Express failed. Charlie and Dave Steinhauer, losing just their first game to Cowboys’ Marvin Thompson and Tom Nicewander, steamed into the Hooterville station with 118 lbs. of coal. They were followed closely into the station by fellow stokers Dale Herfel and Tracy Haag, who rolled in with a 110 lbs. giving Hooterville an 18-point win. No Cowboy hit the Express with more than 98 balls of lead, missing out on a big payday.
