New Glarus Middle School Math News

The New Glarus MS Math Team (Grades 4-8) competed in the Math 24 Competition at Union South on UW-Madison campus on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018. Math 24 is a mental math game where players use the numbers on the card to make 24. Fifteen New Glarus High School students accompanied the team to help proctor the event. Ben Lukszys got 4th place in the 8th-grade division. Kayden Dopp placed 6th in the 7th-grade division. Students participated in the event for two hours and then went on different tours led by the students of the University. They also enjoyed pizza and Babcock ice cream.

<strong>This just in: </strong> In last week’s match between J&M Bar and Kleeman’s, Barb Judd and Jeff Goebler were skunked by Tracy Beutel and Dan Palmer in the fourth round. Speaking of skunks, it was previously reported that Terry Zahler had recently received his first <u>ever</u> skunk. After some intensive research, league records indicate this was fake news. Terry was skunked on at least two previous occasions, once during the 1976/77 season and again during the 1977/78 season. Nice try Terry.

Monticello Falls to Wayland Academy

The Monticello Ponies played a WIAA Regional game against the Trailways East conference team Beaver Dam Wayland Academy on Tuesday, February 27th. The Ponies were seeded #8 coming into the game, while the Big Red were seeded #9. The Ponies were down by just 5 points at the half, after leading with 3 minutes left but Wayland went on a 10-0 run to take the halftime lead. In the second half, Wayland stretched their lead to 19 with a minute left in the game before Jon Errthum made a layup and Sam Allard made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to close the Wayland lead to 14.

Belleville Beats Dodgeland

The Belleville Wildcats played a WIAA Regional game at Dodgeland on Tuesday, February 27th. Belleville was seeded #9 for the tournament, and Dodgeland was seeded #8. It was a close first half and Belleville headed into halftime with a 1 point lead over Dodgeland. In the second half the Wildcats managed to pull away from the host team and won the game, 59-53, earning themselves another shot at the New Glarus Knights on Friday, March 2nd (see story at LINKLINKLINKLINK).

Toss Those Flags, High in the Air

Join us for eight fun filled sessions of Flag Throwing. The Swiss Center of North America is proud to be sponsoring a youth flag throwing class, beginning March 12th, meeting Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., at the New Glarus Middle School MPR room. The class is open to youth from Green County.

Help Take a Bite Out of Cancer!

Join the Relay For Life of Green County Committee members from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Monday, March 12, at the Monroe Moose Lodge, 639 3rd Avenue, and help Take a Bite Out of Cancer during their Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser.
Cost: $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 4-12; children younger than 4 eat free.
Menu: Spaghetti with meat or marinara sauce, garlic bread, green salad, homemade desserts and milk, lemonade, coffee or water.

New Glarus Students Fundraising for Trip

New Glarus High School students are raising money for a spring break Habitat for Humanity trip. They are hosting a 50/50 raffle at local businesses to help fund the trip. Locations for buying raffle tickets are Brenda’s Blumenladen and Culver’s. Prices for the 50/50 raffle would be 1 ticket for $1.00, or 6 tickets for $5.00.
The raffle began Monday, March 5th, and will last one week until Monday, March 12th. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, March 14th.
Please come support local students and purchase a raffle ticket (or two!).

Ag Scholarships Available From the Monticello FFA Alumni

If you are pursuing a career related to agriculture and are currently halfway through your coursework in college, technical school or a short course program, CONGRATULATIONS, you are eligible to earn money for additional educational expenses through the Monticello FFA Alumni. The Monticello FFA Alumni will be offering scholarships to eligible students.

Monticello Lions Pancake Brunch

The Monticello Lions Club will be holding their annual Pancake Brunch on Sunday, March 18, 2018, in the Rhemstedt Gym at the Monticello School from 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
On the menu are Pancakes, Sausage Links, Applesauce, Cheese and your choice of beverage.
Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids 12 and under.
The Brunch is sponsored by the Monticello Lions Club and the Monticello Spanish Club.
