Gene was born in Monticello, Wisconsin, October 27, 1931.
He studied engineering and law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and after graduating joined the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant, where he was stationed in the Pacific Northwest. His first assignment was in Alaska overseeing the construction of the Defense Early Warning line (DEW Line). It was while there he developed an appreciation of the beauty of the state, and his passion for salmon fishing in the pristine rivers of Alaska.

Marjory J. Furseth, age 81, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, at UW Hospital in Madison. She was born on May 2, 1937 in Dodgeville, WI, to her parents, William and Ethel (Kite) Mueller.

Eleventh Annual New Glarus Family Festival

On Sunday, September 9th, the 11th Annual New Glarus Family Festival was held in the Village Park. The festival, sponsored by the Grace Church of New Glarus, with the help of donations has always made people feel welcome with music, a car show, and lots of family friendly activities. Everything at the Family Festival was FREE, including the food.
Although there was no charge for the festival, Grace Church of New Glarus will accept donations to keep the tradition of the Family Festival going again next year.

National FCCLA Conference – Haiden Zimmerman, Wisconsin State FCCLA President

New Glarus student and Wisconsin State FCCLA President, Haiden Zimmerman, represented the state of Wisconsin at the National FCCLA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, this summer. The conference was held June 29th – July 3rd. Haiden participated in the conference as a voting delegate where she helped to determine who would represent FCCLA at the national level.

Belleville Falls to Waterloo

The Belleville volleyball team hosted Waterloo on August 28th and lost in four, 14-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-25.
Jade Halvensleben and Rachael Heittola led the Wildcats with 5 kills each. Brooke Everson had 3 blocks and Sydney Gentilli had 5 aces. Gentilli also had 17 digs. Leading the team in assists were Erin Kittleson and Sophia Grady, each with 9.
The team played at Cambridge on September 4th and will host Marshall on September 6th before heading to the Brodhead Invitational on September 8th.

Palmyra-Eagle Bests New Glarus

The New Glarus volleyball team played at Palmyra-Eagle on Tuesday, August 28th, and lost in 5, 24-26, 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 10-15.
“While it didn’t end in our favor,” said Coach Jenna Piche, “it’s great to have a close competitive battle under our belt headed into conference play on Thursday.”

Ponies Volleyball Victorious Over Vikings

The Monticello Ponies volleyball team hosted a tournament on Saturday, August 25th. Albany, Belmont, Black Hawk, Darlington, Juda, Pecatonica and River Ridge all competed.

Sugar River Soccer Wins Over Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld

With the recent rainy weather throughout the area, the soccer team had only one game last week, on August 30th at Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld. Sugar River won, 2-1.
Charlie Douma, assisted by Jaden Kreklow, scored first for Sugar River. Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld answered back with a goal near the end of the first half.
In the second half, Connor DeLorme scored a goal to seal the win.
Goalkeeper Julian Lutz had 8 saves.

Swimmers Face Tough McFarland Team

The Monroe-New Glarus co-op swim team swam in McFarland on August 28th. The JV team lost, 62-79, and the Varsity team lost 55-115.
