Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

Participants in the Knights of Columbus Council 6630 Free Throw Championship, held at the New Glarus High School. The winners will move on to shoot at Prairie View School, 300 Soden Drive, Oregon, WI, on February 24, 2019, starting at 12:30 p.m. Good luck shooters!

New Glarus Welcomes New Police Officer

New Glarus Police Chief Burt Boldebuck with Logan M. Lange, who has been hired as a full-time police officer with Village of New Glarus beginning February 6, 2019. Lange is an experienced officer, having worked for the Village of Albany and the City of Beloit.

Six FBLA Members Place at Regionals

Monticello High School FBLA members competed at Regionals recently, and six members placed. Jennifer Curry took 1st in Personal Finance and the teams of Abby Wicker and Lindsey Pence (Hospitality Management) and Simon Blohowiak, Lucas Heiser and Evan Guenther (Sports & Entertainment Management) both placed in the top eight. Congrats!

VFW Voice of Democracy Winners Announced

Mr. Paul Burk, Monticello High School English Teacher, encouraged his students to enter the VFW Voice of Democracy contest held recently. Misty Keller won 1st place in the contest and received an award and $100, and Nicole Lehr placed second and received an award and $50.

University of Wisconsin Madison Division of Extension to Offer ^Shifting Gears^"

“Shifting Gears” is a three-day program looking at where farmers are now, where they want to be, and how they get to where they want to be. The first day focuses on family living costs, current balance sheets, and risk tolerance. The second day will look at visioning, goals, estate planning, and tax considerations as farmers shift gears. The final day of the program will focus on marketing their skills in the job market, evaluating potential farm markets and enterprises, and will feature a panel discussion on niche/value added farming.

Sugar River Euchre

Only two teams, It’s Time Mounties and S’Wisco Taphaus Cheese Eaters, were tough enough to brave the cold wind and icy roads on February 7th. The remaining teams decided it best to reschedule their matches, most to February 14th. The Mounties started out strong in their match against the Cheese Eaters going up by 11 after one frame, then up by 20, and still on the positive side with a 14-point lead after three frames. However, by the end of the fourth frame, the Cheese Eaters had a 1-point lead and never looked back finishing the match with a huge 3-point win.

Knights Defeat Heights

On February 5th, the Lady Knights of New Glarus traveled to Cambridge. After leading at halftime by 7 points, New Glarus won the game. Final score, New Glarus 61, Cambridge 46.
Coach Kim Burton commented, “Senior Emily Streiff came out looking to shoot, and was dialed in at Cambridge. Emily finished with 17 points, including 3 for 3 from the 3-point arc. She also had 3 rebounds and 2 steals to help the Knights in a conference road win.”

Wildcats Lose Two Road Games

The Belleville Wildcats boys basketball team played at Palmyra-Eagle on February 5th. Only down by 4 at the half, the Wildcats ran out of steam in the second and lost the game. The final score was Palmyra-Eagle 69, Belleville 56.
Sawyer Fahey scored 17 points, Austin Fahey scored 14 points and Jaydon Winkers put 12 points on the board.
On February 8th, Belleville traveled to play at Waterloo. Down by 6 at the half, Belleville went on to lose the game. The final score was Waterloo 70, Belleville 61.

Belleville Dominates Waterloo

The Belleville Lady Wildcats hosted Waterloo on February 5th. After leading 41-24 at halftime, the Wildcats went on to win the game. The final score was Belleville 83, Waterloo 43.
Leading the team in scoring, and scoring her 1,000th career point – only the second in the program to do so – was Rachael Heittola, with 25 points. Heittola also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Jade Halvensleben scored 15 points and had 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Ashley Hanson scored 8 points with 1 assist and 1 steal.

Ponies Have Heartbreaking Week

On February 5th, the Monticello Ponies boys basketball team played at Black Hawk. Only down by 4 points at the half, the Ponies played hard in the second half, but ended up with a loss. The final score was Black Hawk 61, Monticello 56.
The game was close throughout the first half, with the two teams trading the lead back and forth. A Black Hawk score with 21 seconds left in the game was the Ponies’ downfall.
