UFO Day in Belleville

UFO Day was held in Belleville on Saturday, October 26, 2019.
Despite being a bit chilly, people turned out to the enjoy the annual festival.
In 1987 a UFO sighting witnessed by a Belleville police officer and Dane County Sheriff deputies garnered national attention. Now a celebration of the event is held every year on the Saturday before Halloween. See more photos in the Photo Gallery: https://www.postmessengerrecorder.com/photos.

Dane County Farmers' Market to Move its Late Winter Market to Garver Feed Mill in 2020

The beginning of the new decade will bring changes to the Dane County Farmers’ Market. While locals and visitors alike have probably visited the Market around the Capitol Square during its outdoor season, many have not yet experienced the indoor farmers’ markets offered during the winter season. These markets are more intimate, but patrons will still find many of their favorite Dane County Farmers’ Market members, as well as a full array of Wisconsin fruits and vegetables, cheeses, honey and maple syrups, hyper-local meats, bakery items, and many specialty items.

PSC Urges Consumers to Seek Assistance Before Heating Moratorium

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) urges consumers currently disconnected to contact their local utility to make arrangements for service reconnection prior to the start of the winter heating moratorium. During the moratorium, from November 1 to April 15, utilities are prohibited from disconnecting customers who are behind on their bills.

Hardwood Trees for Planting Spring 2020

Fall is here! The trees are turning colors. When looking at the colorful trees, we should be considering next year’s colors too. The Green County Land & Water Conservation Department is offering nine varieties of trees and two varieties of shrubs for landowners interested in planting next spring. The tree varieties are Bur Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, Sugar Maple, Shagbark Hickory, American Plum, White Pine, and Norway Spruce. Shrubs available are Serviceberry and Black Currant.

No Linkage to CTE From Playing High School Football

When it comes to the long-term effects of concussions in sports, there is a wide range of information published – almost on a daily basis. Unfortunately, much of the media coverage as it relates to high school sports – and particularly the sport of football – is misleading.
Last week, the Concussion Legacy Foundation introduced its new public-service announcement that compared youth football dangers to smoking. As the pre-teen football players puff on cigarettes, the voiceover says, “Tackle football is like smoking, the younger I start, the longer I’m exposed to danger.”

Sugar River Euchre

For the third straight week, the Riley Shufflers have outscored the other eight teams and exceeded 400 total team points in each of those matches. This week they had a combined score of 423 points, beating the Pranksters by 36. Ed Chancellor and Derek Skogen accounted for 115 of the Shuffler’s points (this week’s high score), with Tom Meyer and Randy Skogen adding another 113 points. If not for Jerry Retrum leading his fellow Prankster and partner, Jordy Schmitz, out of trump, Jerry and Jordy may have exceeded their score of 109 points.

Swim Team Wins at Fort Atkinson

The Monroe-New Glarus swim team competed against Fort Atkinson for their last dual meet of the season on October 22nd. The Varsity team won, 114.5-55.5 and the JV team won 45-17.

Knights Lose to Brodhead in Round 2 of Regionals

On Tuesday, October 22nd, the New Glarus volleyball team, who was seeded #9 for the regionals, traveled north to take on #8 seeded Deerfield in the first round of WIAA regional play. The Lady Knights won it in 5: 25-20; 18-25; 17-25; 25-21; 15-4.
Senior Lola Gillaspie had 9 kills and 4 blocks. Freshman Grace Nommensen had 3 blocks and 28 assists. Junior Alexah Mellenberger had 7 kills, sophomore Emma Marty had 3 blocks, sophomore Ellie Eichelkraut had 4 aces and senior Brooke Watrud had 8 digs.

Wildcats Fall in Second Round of Regionals

On October 22nd, the Belleville Lady Wildcats played a WIAA Regional game against Lancaster and won in 3: 25-13; 25-18; 25-21.
Brooke Everson had 17 kills and 1 block. Alyssa Caskey had 3 aces and 8 digs. Ava Foley had 17 kills, Callie Smith had 1 block, Josey Latorre had 1 ace, Erin Kittleson had 40 assists, Jenna Shrader had 5 digs and Mel Humke had 5 digs.
The win earned them a trip to River Ridge, where the Lady Wildcats fell in 5: 25-23; 24-26; 25-14; 11-25; 15-5. No further information was provided by press time.
