<strong>V-E Day in New Glarus is Observed Quietly</strong>
The news of the “unconditional surrender” of the German Army to the Allies, expected for several days and officially made by President Truman at eight o’clock Tuesday morning, brought little excitement to New Glarus.
Everyone stayed at their job, stores and factories remained open and school was held. At the close of the president’s speech, whistles were blown for a short time but everyone remained at the radios in their homes or places of business instead of gathering in the streets.

<strong>University of Mississippi Celebrates Belleville Student in Class of 2020</strong>
<strong>Garrison Allen Woods</strong>, Belleville, is among the more than 5,400 candidates for graduation who was celebrated during a live, virtual celebratory event on May 9, 2020. Woods, who is a Business Administration major, is a candidate for a Master of Business Administration degree in the Graduate School.

On Saturday, May 9, 2020, the New Glarus Fire Department was called to residential fire on Spring Valley Road, north of the Village of New Glarus. Heavy smoke and flames were reported. Fire departments from Belleville, Monticello, Albany, Argyle, Blanchardville, Monroe, Verona, Mount Horeb, and Fitchburg assisted, as well as the New Glarus Area EMS, New Glarus Police Department and Green County Sheriff's Department. There was no one in the house at the time of the fire, however the family of Mark and Keeley Welsh was devastated by the loss of their home and belongings.

May 2, 1945</strong>
Frederick Thacker, radio operator, telephoned his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thacker from Chicago, on Tuesday and expects to be here soon. He has just returned from a nine month’s trip to the South Pacific with a merchant marine ship. He will be home for a month.
Sgt. Richard Gmur has been confined to a hospital in Germany due to illness, according to a letter received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gmur. He is expected to be able to return to his company soon.
