JAMES R. COCKROFT

James R. Cockroft, age 81, passed away on February 27, 2021, after a long battle with Vascular Dementia at the New Glarus Home. He was born in Belleville on September 17, 1938, the son of Robert and Lillian (Stiff) Cockroft.

<strong>Local Students Among Graduates at UW-Eau Claire</strong>
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire awarded 670 degrees in December. Of the degrees awarded, 660 were received by students attending the Eau Claire campus and 19 were received by students attending UW-Eau Claire - Barron County. Local students who received degrees and their fields of study are: Madeline Bartels, Belleville, Education and Human Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, English; and Emily Koch, Monticello, Education and Human Sciences, Bachelor of Science, Special Education.

Monticello Boys Basketball Honors

The Monticello Ponies Boys Basketball Team had a great season!
They earned their second consecutive Conference Championship and were also Regional Champions.
The team won over Shullsburg in the first round of sectionals by a score of 59-55.
Unfortunately the team lost to Hustisford on Saturday night by a score of 70-43.
Six Rivers East Honors went to four players, Peter Gustafson, who was also named Player of the Year, Rudy Wicker, Owen Ace, and Tristin Flanagan.
Monticello Coach Mark Olson was named Coach of the Year.

People's Maps Commission Seeks Public Comment  

The People’s Maps Commission will hold a virtual public hearing for the 2nd Congressional District on Thursday, March 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., to seek public input on the upcoming redistricting of legislative maps. All Wisconsin residents are encouraged to watch and participate.

Enjoying the Sun

Heidi Palmer got this beautiful photo of a pair of Bobcats near New Glarus. She commented that she had seen one in the area before, but not the pair.
The Wisconsin DNR said that there are Bobcats in all 72 counties in the state. Their analysis has suggested that fall population size in northern Wisconsin increased from about 1,600 to an estimate of around 3,800 bobcats in fall 2019. The DNR had no estimate for Bobcats in the southern part of the state.
