Village of New Glarus to Celebrate 175th+1 Anniversary

The New Glarus Chamber of Commerce and Swiss Center of North America are hosting a special weekend celebration in honor of the 175+1 anniversary of the founding of New Glarus! Originally planned for 2020, the anniversary celebrations were rescheduled to 2021 due to the pandemic. Interestingly enough, that was not the first time the anniversary had to be postponed – the centennial anniversary festivities in 1945 were also delayed a year to allow the men and women away at war to return home.

Naturally Speaking

The woolly alder aphid is now in season. If maple trees or alder shrubs are about, you've seen them, little tufts of cotton-like material seemly floating about, but they are winged insects that fly. They produce strands of waxy material from their abdomens, which has the liking of cotton or wool.
These guys are sap-drawing aphids. The waxy material deters others who might feed on the aphids. The material has some sugary honey dew about so the aphids and masses are sticky.

Gerrymandering Affects State Infrastructure

Dear Editor,
Gerrymandering affects our state infrastructure, which includes roads, drinking water, stormwater, bridges, power utilities, and broadband. Infrastructure doesn’t stop at political boundaries established by gerrymandering. Because gerrymandered boundaries were drawn to have those districts favor staying in control of one political party, that party gets to determine what parts of our infrastructure get repaired, expanded or upgraded and if and how those projects are funded.
