Merry and Bright Belleville

Beautify Downtown Belleville, along with numerous local businesses and sponsors, presented a community lights display at Belleville Community Park.
Beginning on December 12, 2021, the lights turned on at dusk and visitors could drive through the park and enjoy the lights.
On December 18th, there was an interactive community event at the park, featuring hot cocoa, coffee, candy canes and treats while people could walk through the lights display with their families.

Volunteers Needed for Midwinter Bald Eagle Count

The Eagle Nature Foundation (ENF) is seeking volunteers to help with its 62nd Annual Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Count to be conducted on January 29 and 30, 2022. This annual Bald Eagle count is being conducted throughout the Midwest, from Northern Minnesota to Louisiana. To eliminate duplication the count is actually a three hour count on Saturday, with Sunday being used only if weather, or health, does not allow a person or organization to count the Bald Eagles in their own locality on the official count day.

Lady Knights Dealt Loss by Lancaster

The New Glarus varsity girls basketball team played at Lancaster on December 13th. Down at the half 21-32, the Lady Knights battled in the second half to try to overcome Lancaster but were not successful. The final score was Lancaster 55, New Glarus 39.

Sugar River Euchre

The Kleeman’s Hay Shakers finished the first half of the season with a perfect 9 and 0 record after their 2-point win over the previously undefeated Starlight Express. Al Zimmerman and Don Williams stacked 115 bales on the tracks to block the Express, sending the boxcars home empty.

Raiders Wrestling Competes at Badger State Invitational

The Sugar River Raiders varsity wrestlers competed in the 48th Annual Badger State Invitational at the Alliant Energy Center on December 18th against 17 other teams. The Raiders finished in 12th place.
Wrestling at 106 lbs, Blake Endres (10-4) placed 4th and scored 18.5 team points. Endres had a bye in the first two rounds and in round three he won by tech fall over Fennimore’s Dalton Leffler. In round four he lost by fall to Darlington’s Ethan Aird. In the 3rd Place Match, Endres lost by decision to Badger’s Logan Clausen.

Belleville Girls Basketball Moves to 8-0 After Impressive Wins Over Poynette and New Glarus

On Tuesday, December 14th, the Belleville Wildcats hosted the Poynette Pumas, which is a very tall and deep team. The game saw both teams feeling each other out in the first half which led to a tight game at halftime and saw Belleville go into the locker room with a 33-27 lead over Poynette. With a few adjustments at halftime, the Wildcats came out with more energy and intensity and saw them extend their lead to a 21-point victory with a final score of 69-48.

Ponies Win Close Game Over Vikings

On Tuesday, December 14th, the Monticello Ponies boys basketball team hosted the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards. The Ponies trailed by 8 at the half and could not overcome the deficit in the second half. The final score was Wisconsin Heights 64, Monticello 53.
“This week we stepped out of our conference on Tuesday against Wisconsin Heights. They played physical and aggressive and by the time we adjusted we had fallen behind,” said Coach Mark Olson. “We scratched to get the game close a couple of times, but just didn’t get over the hump.”

Wildcats Have Winning Week

On December 13th, the Belleville Wildcats boys basketball team hosted Richland Center. Leading at the half 42-24, the Wildcats went on the win the game. The final score was Belleville 74, Richland Center 52.
Trevor Syse led the Wildcats in scoring with 25 points, including 4 3-pointers, while Andrew Ace scored 18 points and DeMarcus Conner scored 10 points.

Knights Lose Close Game to Platteville

The New Glarus Glarner Knights hosted Platteville on December 14th. Up by 1 at the half, the Knights battled in the second half but ended up losing by 1. The final score was Platteville 39, New Glarus 38.
Dain Walter led the Knights in scoring with 18 and had 14 rebounds, while Jack Parman scored 5 points and had 4 rebounds, and Carter Siegenthaler and Bryce Stampfli both scored 4 points and had 1 rebound each.
On December 23rd, the Knights will play at Monticello and will be hosting a tournament on December 27th and 28th.
