Consumer Alert: Gift Cards Fraudulently Drained of Funds

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has recently received several complaints from consumers after they discovered their newly purchased, unused gift cards did not contain any funds. Many consumers reported that despite there being no evidence of tampering on the cards or packaging, they contained zero balance before ever being used. Some consumers reported their gift cards being depleted within 20 minutes of activation.

Settlement Announced of Enforcement Action Against Extended Vehicle Warranty Telemarketer

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) has entered into a settlement with N.C.W.C., Inc., resolving the State’s claims against the company for violations of Wisconsin telemarketing laws in marketing extended vehicle service plans to automobile owners in Wisconsin. Wisconsin DOJ sued N.C.W.C. in April 2022, upon referral from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

DHS Launches Free Telehealth Service for COVID-19 Treatment

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) announces a free telehealth service (https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/telehealth.htm) to streamline access to COVID-19 treatment. COVID-19 antiviral treatments must be taken within five days of symptoms starting, even if symptoms are mild, making it essential to quickly access a clinician for a prescription. Anyone 18 and older who tests positive for COVID-19 can have a telehealth consultation with a health care clinician within 5-30 minutes.

Historic 40-State Google Settlement over Location Tracking Practices Announced

Attorney General Josh Kaul announced, that Wisconsin, along with 39 other attorneys generals, has reached a $391.5 million multistate settlement with Google over its location tracking practices relating to Google Account settings. This is the largest multistate Attorney General privacy settlement in the history of the U.S. Wisconsin will receive $8,421,918.67 from the settlement.

Mediacom Offers Scholarships to H.S. Seniors

Mediacom Communications is offering $60,000 in scholarship support for high school seniors who plan to obtain further education. The scholarship program is in its 22nd consecutive year and Mediacom’s investment will award $1,000 World Class Scholarships to 60 high school seniors.
Scholarship recipients are given the flexibility to use the financial awards to support post-secondary college costs or vocational training from an accredited institution starting in the fall of 2023. Award selection is based on academic achievement and leadership accomplishments.

Wildcats Win Over Barneveld

The Belleville Lady Wildcats varsity basketball team played at Barneveld on November 22nd. Up 31-22 at the half, the Wildcats dialed up the intensity in the second half to leave with the win. The final score was Belleville 66, Barneveld 47.
Leading Belleville with 17 points was Lainey Winkers, who also had 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, while Toria Devoe scored 16 points and had 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals and Addison Edge scored 14 points and had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Naturally Speaking

Wisconsin has had wild turkeys scratching out a living for centuries. In the late 1800s these birds were common in southwest Wisconsin but then started to wane due to several factors, including unregulated hunting, loss of specific habitat, and diseases tolerated by domestic fowl but not wild birds. Records show that a wild turkey was killed in Lafayette County in 1881, possibly the last wild bird shot until several attempts were made to reintroduce wild birds from other states.
