Better Brodhead Awarded Mental Health Awareness Training Grant

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently awarded Better Brodhead $500,000 to implement Mental Health Awareness Training in Green and Lafayette Counties over the next four years.

Monticello Foundation Awards Scholarships

The Board of Directors of The Monticello Foundation, Inc. met November 10, 2022, and voted to award nine scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each to Monticello alumni currently in college. Congratulations to these deserving students: Sarah Blumer, Miah Brokopp, Mackenzie Errthum, Alyssa Holcomb, Claire Klossner, Marissa Peterson, Ali Risley, Natalie Roe, and Reece Rufer. This brings the total amount of scholarships awarded in 2022 to $49,800, and the total amount awarded since 1995 to $559,525!

Sugar River Euchre

The match between the Pipe Benders and Shufflers had some intense moments. The first was when Ross Nesheim and Mike O’Brien broke into a cold sweat after Randy Skogen and Stan Hook made three straight loan hands and recorded the first 12 points in the 4th frame. Mike and Ross were able to chase off the skunk in the 4th hand and they were ecstatic to leave the table with 2 points. In the 7th frame, Wes Parks, holding four trump, found great pleasure in setting Stan, with three trump plus a suit ace and king, called a loaner.

Raiders Crowned Conference Dual Champions

On January 10th, the Sugar River Raiders wrestled against Mount Horeb/Barneveld. The Raiders won the match, 51-19.
Raider Carson Loshaw (195 lbs) won by fall over Tristen Miller.
Wrestling at 220 lbs, Raider Garrett Pauli lost by decision to Garrett Waefler.
Raider Isaac Erb (285 lbs) lost by fall to Levi Maier.
Wrestling at 113 lbs, Blake Endres won by MD over Cole Cunningham.
Raider Kevin Vega (120 lbs) lost by fall to JJ Poarch.
Raider Ashlin Mihlbauer (126 lbs) won by fall over Landon Robenhagen.

Lady Knights Continue Historic Season

On Tuesday, January 10th, the New Glarus Lady Knights hosted the Lady Wildcats. Taking a 46-16 lead into halftime, the Knights held the Wildcats to just 10 points in the second while adding 20 of their own towards their 66-26 victory.
Lindsey Schadewalt scored 27 points for New Glarus, along with 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block, while Grace Nommensen scored 13 points and had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal and Alex Atwell scored 9 points and had 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 5 blocks.

Wildcats Succumb to Cardinals

On Friday, January 13th, the Belleville Lady Wildcats played at Marshall. Only down by 1 at the half, Belleville was edged out in the second half by Marshall and lost the game. The final score was Belleville 41, Marshall 46.
Leading the Wildcats with 15 points was Addison Edge, who also had 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Maddi DeSmet scored 14 points, along with having 16 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 blocks and Toria Devoe scored 7 points and had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Glarner Knights Defeat Poynette

The New Glarus Glarner Knights played at Poynette on January 14th. Trailing by a single point at the half, the Knights improved their scoring in the second half to win the game. The final score was New Glarus 70, Poynette 65.
Max Parman scored 16 points to lead the Knights, while AC Strok scored 15 points and Ethan Friedrich and Max Marty each scored 10 points.
The Knights hosted Waterloo on January 17th. They will play at Wisconsin Heights on January 20th, host Mineral Point on January 23rd, and host Marshall on January 26th.

Wildcats Score During Last Seconds to Defeat Knights

On January 9th, the Belleville Wildcats hosted Poynette, losing by a single point. The final score was Poynette 68, Belleville 67.
Carter Scholey led the Wildcats with 15 points and had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, while Everett Clark scored 11 points and had 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 block and Kaden DeSmet and Jack Erickson scored 10 points apiece. DeSmet had 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block while Erickson had 1 rebound, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Lady Ponies Fall to Comets and Eagles

On January 10th, the Lady Ponies of Monticello hosted the Lady Comets of Albany. Down 15-30 at the half, Monticello’s offense improved in the second half but so did Albany’s and Albany came out the winner. The final score was Albany 71, Monticello 38.
“Ellie did have another double/double with 15 points and 11 rebounds,” said Coach Mark Gustafson. “Albany is good.”
Ellie Gustafson scored 15 points for the Lady Ponies, while Molly Olson put 9 points on the board, including two 3-pointers, and Dalana Trumpy scored 7 points.
