2019 Year in Review - Monticello

<strong>October</strong>
The Village of Monticello was named the Monticello Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for October. The Monticello Village Hall has undergone many changes this past year, including leadership under the new Village President Leaora Miller. With recent vacancy of the Village Clerk position, Leaora and Sharon Ackerman teamed up to keep Village Hall operating.
The Monticello Public Library underwent some renovations to improve the space in the children’s area of the library. They switched the circulation desk and juvenile non-fiction section, and in the process made more room for a multi-purpose program space in the middle. The angled wall was removed as well and Katrina said, “It feels like we have twice the space now!”
The Monticello Public Library was the 2019 recipient of the South Central Library System (SCLS) Foundation’s “Super Awesome Library Award,” which is “For the library that was overall awesome in 2019.”
The American Legion and Monticello American Legion Post #256 both celebrated 100 years this year. A celebration was held on Saturday, October 19, 2019, in the Rehmstedt Gym at Monticello High School.
The 40th Annual Native American Indian Artifact Show was held at Monticello. There were 90 tables filled with historic to pre-historic artifacts. The Boy Scout Troop #106 had wonderful food. There were wonderful items brought in for identification.
After winning the conference title, and upon arriving in Monticello, the students and coaches of the New Glarus-Monticello Cross Country Teams rode through town on Monticello’s fire trucks, after posing for photos.
The Monticello High School Art Club hosted Haunticello on Friday, October 25th.
<strong>November</strong>
Monticello High School presented “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Junior!” on Saturday, November 2, 2019, and Sunday, November 3, 2019.
Sarah Quade, teacher in the Monticello School District, was named Rural Teacher of the Year by Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance (WiRSA).
Monticello native Gundel “Gundy” Metz was named the 2019 Woman Veteran of the Year by the WDVA.
The Second Annual Carol Sing at The Morning Mug in Monticello was held on November 21, 2019. It was a full house, with reportedly over 100 people who came and sang their favorite Christmas Carols.
The Monticello Excellence in Education Fund announced the 2019 Grant Recipients. Since 2007, the Monticello EIE has supported 138 grant projects and awarded more than $54,000 of funding into the school.
<strong>December</strong>
The gym was packed with fans at the New Glarus vs Monticello game on Monday, December 2nd, and it was a very exciting game indeed. The final score was Monticello 74, New Glarus 63.
The Monticello Lions Club created 12 Holiday Food Baskets and delivered them on Saturday, November 30th.
On Saturday, December 7, 2019, local law enforcement agencies took kids shopping as part of the annual Shop With A Cop. Kids got to meet and get to know officers while picking out presents for themselves and their families.
On December 6, 2019, the Monticello Elementary School presented Lights, Camera, Christmas in the Rehmstedt Gym.
Customers at The Morning Mug on Saturday, December 14, 2019, were treated to some great music when the Green County Piano Teachers sponsored a Piano Play-A-Thon.
Kids could visit with Santa at the Monticello Fire Station and then get a ride on a fire truck to Santa’s Workshop at Zwingli United Church of Christ. There they could buy gifts for their families and have them wrapped with help from members of the Monticello National Honor Society. There was also a Pre-Christmas Bake Sale sponsored by the Zwingli Women’s Guild.
The Holiday Luncheon was held in the Rehmstedt Gym at Monticello School.
