Belleville Dairy Queen Bids Farewell

Hello, I am Mikayla Brey your 2017-2018 Belleville Dairy Queen. I wanted thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to be involved in the Green County Dairy Queen Program. I have learned so much more on the dairy industry and how it works. I have grown in confidence and gained the confidence to be sure of myself when talking to the public.
I wanted to leave you with my favorite radio report that I did this past month. Wisconsin's dairyland is undergoing a bit of a revolution, and it has nothing to do with the size of the farms or Wisconsin license plates. It's who's caring for the cows, monitoring their health and managing the herds. According to the agriculture educators in west-central Wisconsin, there are more women making the leap to own and work their own dairy herd. It's a stereotype-busting trend that's as undeniable as it is dramatic. The male to female ratio has changed noticeably over the past few years. Women account for 91% of the 650 students in the animal science program. Farmers are noticing and benefiting from the special connection many female farmers develop with their gentle bovines. Cows just respond better when handled with a gentler touch. Women farmers mostly have a gentler bedside manner that the cows seem to be calmer and stress-free. Employers are seeking out female workers because of the tendency to have a softer touch and their attention to detail on the farm. Some of the farmers believe that the cows produce more milk when they are calm and not stressed out. In the early years the wife would tend to the children in the house and leave the farming to her husband, but times are changing for the farm owners of Wisconsin. Look out Wisconsin, your next farm owners might just tip the scale with the agriculture industry and help better the next century in farming and agriculture.
