Belleville Girls Lose to Cambridge

The Lady Wildcats headed to Cambridge on January 5th. Coach Kerry Steinagel said, “This game was hard fought by both teams. Cambridge came out strong, with a 9-0 lead to start the game. After a few minutes our nerves final settled down and we started playing defense. The girl’s defense really picked up and we were more patient on offense. We took a 22-15 lead late in the first half.”
Belleville was up at the half over the Bluejays, 22-18.
“After half, the teams traded baskets with the lead never extending over 5 for the rest of the game,” said Steinagel. The final score was Cambridge 50, Belleville 48. “This game was a tough one to lose because of how hard the girls fought for this game.”
Belleville’s leading scorers were Tara Hanna with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals; Grace Schulting with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists; and Sam Christen had 6 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Cambridge’s Elyssa Stein had 13 points. Morgan Talbott scored 12 and Joriann Clary scored 9 points.
The girls hosted Marshall on Friday night. “The game pretty much was handled by Marshall early on.  Marshall started out on a 17-5 lead and never looked back.  Marshall can shoot the ball pretty well and can score quickly in transition,” said Steinagel. By half-time, the score was Marshall 46, Belleville 20.
“The one thing about this game - I was proud on how hard they fought, being down a few starters and playing the best team on our schedule so far. Everyone expected us to roll over and the girls just competed in this game,” ended Steinagel.
The final score of the game was Marshall 74, Belleville 39.
Grace Schulting led the Wildcats with 17 points, three rebounds and two assists. Aimee Sies put 6 points on the board, and had two rebounds and four steals. Sam Christen scored 5 points, and had four rebounds and two steals.
Elizabeth Lutz scored 14 points for the Cardinals. Kiana Canon put 12 points on the board for her team, and Kelsey Bakken scored 11 points.
The girls stayed in Belleville to face Deerfield on January 12th, and host New Glarus on January 14th.
