Belleville Girls Lose to Heights, Poynette

The Belleville girls played Wisconsin Heights on February 16th at home. Coach Kerry Steinagel commented, “The game started off with us not being to hit a shot at the start of the game. Heights took a lead of 7-0 to start the game, and then we got a steal from Aimee Sies who made a great crossover move at the free throw and finished with a layup. At this point on both teams battled back and forth until half-time, where we scored on a short jump shot by Krista Diaz and Heights quickly took the ball up the court and hit buzzer beater three right before the half.”
Wisconsin Heights was leading at half-time, 22-14.
“The second half started out the same way, as we got down by 12 at one point in the second. Tara Hanna started to heat up in the second and scored 16 out her 18 points in the second half. The girls never gave up and closed the score within 2 with about a minute left, and we had a couple of opportunities to win or tie the game but never were able to capitalize on them,” added Steinagel.
Belleville only had five turnovers in the entire game, but couldn’t pull out the win. The final score was Wisconsin Heights 48, Belleville 42.
Tara Hanna led Belleville with 18 points, four rebounds and one assist. Taylor Legler scored 8 points and had six rebounds and one steal and Grace Schulting scored 5 points and had two rebounds and four assists.
Kristen Barman scored 13 points for her team. Kaela Kraemer and Macenzie Kraemer each scored 9 points for the Vanguards.
On Friday, February 19th, the girls headed to Poynette to face the Pumas. The Wildcats trailed by just five points at half-time.
“Going into the game I knew they liked to shoot a lot threes. This is exactly what Poynette did as they shot 29 three pointers in the game. They made 11, but they hit back-to-back three pointers in the middle of the first half that really hurt us. I thought we played a great first half and going into the locker room we outplayed them,” said Steinagel. “The second half was tough as we gave up a couple three pointers to start the second half and we just could never really recover. Overall, the girls have really worked hard this season on getting a couple of our goals. I know our record doesn’t show it, but the improvement this year really has shown, and the girls have to be proud of that. Now off to the playoffs and Parkview.”
The final score of the game was Poynette 62, Belleville 45.
Tara Hanna poured in 15 points and had six rebounds and three assists for Belleville. Taylor Legler added 11 points, seven rebounds and one assist and Krista Diaz scored 7 points and had four rebounds and one steal.
Belleville played at home against Parkview in a WIAA Regional game on February 23rd.
