On Saturday, April 11, the Belleville softball team played a double-header, facing Wisconsin Dells in the first game and Mauston in the second game. The Wildcats defeated both teams, winning 8-7 in eight innings against Wisconsin Dells and dominating Mauston 11-5.
In the first game, the Wildcats committed seven errors, but they had two double plays which helped keep Wisconsin Dells from scoring more runs. Both double plays started with Taylor Wallom making catches in the outfield and then throwing runners out who didn’t make it back to their bases.
“Another thing that helped us win was that we were walked nine times,” stated Head Coach Connie Wunschel. “We scored a run on a walk and the final run was scored on a wild pitch.”
Junior Riley Helwig pitched all eight innings, striking out six, walking three, giving up eight hits, and three earned runs.
On the offensive end, senior Claire Johnsrud was two for four with two runs scored and one RBI; one of her hits was a double. Sophomore Alli Kowalski was three for four with two runs scored and one RBI while freshman Cassidy Heller was two for four with one RBI.
Junior Miranda O’Rourke went two for four, hitting one double. Junior Taylor Kenkel was one for two, but she was on base four of her five times up, twice on walks and once on an error.
“That error was in the eighth inning, and she was the runner that scored on the wild pitch to win the game in the bottom of the eighth,” explained Wunschel.
“Mauston was ahead of us going into the bottom of the third inning 3-1, but we came up strong in our half of the inning and scored five to get the lead back at 6-3. They scored another run in the fourth, but we scored five more in the sixth to pull away,” Wunschel said.
Mauston committed only four errors and only walked four girls, but they all came at the same time in the Wildcats’ two big scoring innings. Only three players were left on bases.
Wallom went two for four with one run scoring while junior Taylor Kenkel was two for three with two runs scored and one RBI.
Heller was three for four with one run scored, five RBIs, and one double. O’Rourke was two for three with one run scored and one RBI.
