Early in May, Belleville High School students enrolled in the Dane County Youth Apprenticeship Biotechnology Program presented projects they have worked on while employed in biotech businesses in the area.
Second year high school student projects included genetic identification for ABS, microbes in vocal health and disease for UW-Madison's Department of Surgery, malt heritage study for the USDA- Cereal Crops Research Unit, applying circular RNA in E. coli at UW Madison's Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and many other interesting projects.
Belleville's own Elizabeth Erb participated in the program this year and was hired by Dr. Dan Noguera's lab at UW-Madison's Civil and Environmental Engineering to work with PhD candidate Pamela Camejo and master's candidate Natalie Keene.
The project is fluorescence in situ hybridization (or FISH) and is focused on improving biological wastewater treatment systems.
