Knights Lose to Pecatonica and Poynette in First Games of the Season

On Friday, April 10, the New Glarus baseball team was defeated by Poynette, 3-1 at home.
“What a game! This was the best baseball game I have seen our team play in the past three years!  We played great defensively and battled hard as a team.  We had a few calls not go our way, but I was proud of how our players handled themselves and continued to stay in the game and not let this get to them,” said Head Coach Ross Eddy. “Koner French pitched the best game of his career and was lights out.  He went eight innings, and Poynette could not touch him.  He gave our team a huge boost.  We struggled to get runs to help him.  We cut down on the errors and played great.  Even though this game did not end with a win, I think it showed us that we can be a pretty good team.  It was a great confidence booster.  If we can continue to get pitching like we did from Koner,  we are going to be tough.  I am just proud of my guys and how they battled.”
Austin Schleuter was four for one while Gavin Binger was four for one as well with one run. Koner French went one for three with one RBI. Andrew Nimtz was one for three.
Poynette left nine players on bases while New Glarus stranded eight.
French stole three bases, Jared Carney stole two, and Binger stole three.
Starting on the mound was French, who pitched eight innings; he gave up six hits, one run, one earned run, walked two, and struck out ten.
Carney then pitched one inning where he gave up four hits, two runs, two earned runs, and struck out one.
Earlier that week on Monday, April 6, the New Glarus baseball team battled Pecatonica. Pecatonica emerged victorious 12-2.
Koner French led the Knights going one for one with one RBI while Austin Schleuter was one for two with one RBI.
New Glarus left six players on bases while Pecatonica only left two. Errors were committed by Brandon Winder, Andrew Nimtz, Hayden Latsch, Jared Carney and Andrew Molencamp. Koner French stole a base for the Knights.
On the mound for New Glarus was French, who pitched two innings giving up three hits, three runs, giving up two earned runs, walking two, and striking out three.
Carney then took over pitching two innings; he gave up one hit, three runs, one wild pitch, walking one, and striking out two.
Then, Nimtz pitched. He gave up two hits, five runs, two wild pitches, one earned run, and walked two.
Noah Zimmerman was up next giving up one run, one earned run, three wild pitches, and walking one.
“Our team played tough for the first game of the season.  We know that Pecatonica is always a tough team, and we enjoy playing them early in the season to gauge where we are at.  We went in to the game with the idea to get a lot of playing time for our players and to get them comfortable out on the mound.  We were able to do that,” explained Eddy. “The outcome of the game is not what we wanted to see, but with being young, it was good for our players to see some game action.  We just need to cut down on the errors.  You are going to win very few — if any — games where you have nine errors.  Overall, I was very happy with how the team came out and played.  We need to keep working and get better for our next game.”
