Five members of the Monroe-New Glarus swim team, all New Glarus High School students, competed at the 2021 WIAA Girls Fall Swimming & Diving Championship on Friday last week. Before they left town, driving through streets lined with supporters, the high school held a pep rally for them.
“We are so proud of how the girls ended this season. We had several season best times, as well as some personal best times. Even when they felt tired at practice, they continued to push themselves and the results of them pushing through paid off,” said Coach Rachel Root.
Coach Haley Kaiser added, “Three out of the five state swimmers were underclassmen. Morgan and Karley displayed strong leadership skills throughout the state meet. They supported their teammates well and got everyone excited for the state atmosphere. We are looking forward to watching our underclassmen continue to grow as individuals and improve their swim times throughout their high school years. Our underclassmen displayed leadership skills throughout the season at practices. They were role-models for their teammates.”
Highlights at State included Karley Michels ending her swimming career with a personal best split in the 50 Breaststroke. Morgan Erstad had season best times for the 100 Backstroke as well as her 50 Back and 100 Free Relay splits. Delaney Lynch went a personal best split time in the 400 Free Relay. Riley Hoesly went a personal best split time in the 200 Medley Relay. Mazie Paradis broke the school records for the 200 IM (previously held by Mekenzie Hammer) and 100 fly (previously held by Alanna Bader-2005).
