The Monroe/New Glarus High School Swim Team swam in their first meet of the season on Tuesday, August 23rd, against the Platteville/Lancaster team. The Monroe/New Glarus JV team won, 53-23, and the Varsity team also won with a score of 101 over Platteville/Lancaster’s 69.
“The first meet of the season was an exciting one!” exclaimed Coach Linda Moser. “It is always good to get that first meet under your belt, but this year it was even more important because 12 of the 20 swimmers are swimming this season for the first time on a high school team.”
Senior Skylar Lassen placed first in both of her events. She won the 200-Meter Free event with a time of 2:23.93, and the 400-Meter Free with a time of 5:14.33.
Maddie Hammer, a junior, placed first in the 200-Meter IM with a time of 2:42.20, and first in the 100-Meter Breaststroke with a time of 1:24.68.
Swimming in her first high school meet, Brynn Ritschards finished first in the 50-Meter Free with a time of 32.61.
Samantha Ellefson placed first in the 100-Meter Free with a time of 1:13.58. Teammate Brynn Ritschards finished right behind Ellefson in the event, with a time of 1:13.74.
Ellefson also took first place in the 100-Meter Backstroke, with a time of 1:28.57. Teammates Kayleigh Nesbitt and Dee Delforge placed second and third in the event, respectively.
The team consisting of Emily Meritt, Cammi Ganshert, Brynn Ritschards and Maddie Hammer placed first in the 200-Meter Free Relay with a time of 2:09.21. Placing second in the event, with a time of 2:26.77, was the team of Samantha Ellefson, Kylie Houston, Ally Einbeck and Madison Katzenberger.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us as we move forward,” said Moser. “I was very proud of how they pulled together and supported each other even when things didn’t go as planned!”
The team travels to Freeport, IL, on Saturday, September 3, 2016. The meet begins at 11:00 a.m.
