The Monticello Lions will be celebrating their 40th anniversary at the annual meeting and Christmas Party on December 2nd at T & D’s in Monticello. They were chartered October 30, 1978. Their sponsoring club was the New Glarus Lions Club. They had 24 members when they were chartered. Lion Maynard Hefty was the first President. There are four chartered members that are still members. This includes Lion Maynard Hefty, Lion John A. Stenbroten, Lion Ernest Gempeler and Lion Jim McNeill.
Today we have 54 members, which includes six women. For 40 years the Lions have supported the school through scholarships and other events, and supported the village in many ways. They have supported the Wisconsin Lions at the state level by donating to the Camp at Rosholt, WI, to the Eye Bank, Mission to Mexico and many other functions. We have also supported local fire departments and EMS squads. We are a member of LCIF-Lions Clubs International, who help people around the world. We helped to eliminate measles worldwide by providing vaccines to many, many children in different countries. We help people who have gone through disasters such as floods, etc. The Lions are always there to lend a helping hand. Our motto is ‘WE SERVE’, and we do just that. Our service projects are many and we are always glad to help locally or worldwide.
