Monticello Lions and Lioness Clubs Promote Diabetes Awareness Month

According to the CDC, almost 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, or 9.3% of the population!  While an estimated 21 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, one-fourth are unaware they have this disease.  The estimated total of direct and indirect costs for this disease is $245 billion.
Diabetes Alert Day, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, is held on the fourth Tuesday in March.  It is a one-day “wake-up call,” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This disease is increasing by large numbers yearly.
The Wisconsin Lions Foundation and the Monticello Lions and Lioness Clubs are promoting Diabetes Awareness the entire month of March.  The Lions/Lioness Clubs will have a window display at the Monticello Historical Society for the entire month and will also have handouts available at Gempeler’s Supermarket.  There will also be handouts at the Monticello School and Monticello Public Library.

Please remember that one-fourth of the people who have diabetes don’t know it.  The earlier diabetes is detected, the easier it is to control.
