New Glarus Baseball Loses to Pirates in Regionals

On June 2, the New Glarus baseball team played Waterloo in the first round of regionals with the Pirates the victors, 5-1.
At the plate, Austin Schlueter was one for four, Dalton Way was one for three, Koner French was one for two with a run scored, Andrew Nimtz was one for three; and Hayden Latsch was two for three with one RBI.
From the mound, French hurled the ball the first five innings where he gave up three runs – all earned – on four hits while walking four and striking out one.
Jared Carney went the last inning for the Knights; he gave up two runs – on earned – on no hits while walking four and striking out two.
“Our guys played really well, and it was a solid game defensively for us. Koner French threw for us and had a great game. We held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, and I thought if we could get through this innings that we would have a good chance to pick up the victory,” explained Head Coach Ross Eddy. “Waterloo was able to get a few timely hits that scored a few runs. Jared Carney came into the game and held them at three. We left guys on in scoring position throughout the game, and that came back to hurt us. We were just not able to score when we had the opportunities. I am proud of our guys and how we played as a team and finished the season strong.”
Talking about the season as a whole Eddy stated “this is a group of young men that I am going to remember for a long time. We had our struggles early in the season but were able to keep pushing and working hard to have a great end of the year! We were very young again, starting only three upperclassmen. This team continued to grind and push itself, and we kept talking about how the hard work would eventually pay off. It did in our last seven games, going 3-4. We were able to beat Belleville twice and Lakeside Lutheran – a team that I cannot remember the last time we beat them. We started to believe in ourselves, and it showed up on the field. They laid a great foundation to what they will be capable of next year.”
