Petra Streiff
Age: 65
Occupation: Retired
Years lived in village: 28
Incumbent? Yes
Have you been on the village board or held any other public office before? If so please describe: The only office I have held is village board, where I have served for the last four years.
Why are you running for village board? I am running again for the board because I think public service is essential for communities to thrive and grow in positive ways. Local government is the place we can all have an impact and a say in decisions. We may not, and will not, always get what we want, but everyone has a voice.
What issues do you find most important to the village board? List your top three priorities: My first priority is seeing the new library project happen in the next two years. This has been long debated and now a good solution has been agreed to. It will be great to see it built! Next, since I have served on the parks and rec committee, I would like to be a part of long-term planning for our parks. Working with the Town of New Glarus, I’m sure we can come up with solutions to our need for more ball diamonds and other park facilities. My third priority is continued improvements to our downtown and promotion of our Swiss heritage.
If you could reverse one village action, what would that be? There were some things that I wish had gone differently in my time on the board. However, I think it’s important that issues be discussed and, when decisions are made, that the board move on. Each board member makes up her/his own mind, with citizen input, and votes accordingly. Reversing a decision/action needs to be something a majority of the board members wants.
Any additional comments? I have been honored to serve on the New Glarus Village Board and would do my best to work with everyone if I am re-elected. Please call me with suggestions or concerns that you have regarding village services or decisions the board makes. We have amazing staff and volunteers here in New Glarus who continue to work together to keep our village the friendly, safe and beautiful place it is. I would appreciate your vote on April 3rd.
