Standards Based Reporting

As we develop stronger instructional practices that allow our students to achieve more, we need to address how we report student progress. Grades K through 6 will be piloting a new report card this year.
The traditional report card gave parents minimal amounts of information and we want to report specifically where students are in their learning. This type of communication will help create a much stronger learning community.
The traditional report card reflects a percentage that encompasses many aspects of learning. When we wrap all the information into one grade it becomes difficult to truly track student growth. The single grade does not distinguish achievement from attitude or effort from participation.
This type of reporting does not work well with personalized learning. We want to give parents a clearer and more detailed picture of their child’s progress so parents truly understand where their child is in their learning.
In an effort to solve the grade reporting issue, a grade levels K through 6 created a report card committee with representatives from each grade level as well as reading interventionists and principals.
This committee met a total of six times with the goal to create a new report card that provides parents with a clearer and more detailed picture of their child’s academic performance in school. They came up with the Standards Based Reporting System.
This new reporting method will not show your student’s grade in the typical A, B, C, D, or F, but rather numerically with 1, 2, 3, or 4. These numerical values tell parents what level of understanding students have on a particular standard.
The new report card breaks down the standard and shows parents how their student is progressing and where they will need to be at the end of the year.
As we grow in our instructional practices and with personalized learning we will continue to update our methods of communication so we give parents the information they need to play an active role in their child’s academic life.
