Twenty-four card players invaded Kleeman's Bar & Grill last Thursday night to show off their skills in the Sugar River League's Mid-Winter Tournament. Once partners were drawn, the chest thumping began. Which couple would dominate the tournament and which would go down in flames? By the end of the third round only two couples were still standing tall with a perfect night so far. But in the fourth round, John Baumgartner and Laurel Grindle fell off the platform by securing just 9 points, ending their hopes of a perfect score. Whereas, Opie Taylor and Roger Truttmann stood strong all the way through the eighth frame to finish with a perfect 120 points.
John Baumgartner and Laurel Grindle finished in second place with 111 points by winning 6 of their games. Don Williams and Jeff Judd also won 6 to take third place with 109 points. Leo Humphrey and Jerry Judd placed fourth with 104 points, while Giff Hoesly and Jerome Krantz rounded out the top five with 103. Other scores were: Randy Skogen and Mary Humphrey, plus Chris Hook and Al Zimmerman, ended with 99 points, Jeff Goebler and Stan Hook had a 97, Tom Magnuson and Derek Skogen an 82, Loretta Herfel and Barb Judd 81, Dave Hook and Dave Herfel a 75. Dave, I hear you can receive free Euchre lessons from your Loretta. Supposedly, it takes just one call, that's all. The tournament's low score of 64 was recorded by Scott Hook and Jim Day. No matter the score each couple ended with, I believe all had a great time.
At the end of the night, League President Jerome Krantz announced the tournament winners and awarded trophies for the 2019/2020 season. The traveling League Championship trophy went to the Starlight Express (previously known as the Harley Blue Express) with each team member also receiving an individual trophy. Team members are Captain Opie Taylor, Charlie Steinhauer, Shawn Farrell, Tracy Haag, Steve Hoffmaster, Steve Thoni, Dave Steinhauer, John Scheidegger, Dale Herfel and Karen Miller. Perfect score trophies were presented to Harry and Jack Gehin. Harold Schlimgen took home the high average trophy with an average of 105.750 points per match. The 2021/2022 season's first half statistics were also posted for players to examine.
