Sugar River Euchre

This just in: In last week’s match between J&M Bar and Kleeman’s, Barb Judd and Jeff Goebler were skunked by Tracy Beutel and Dan Palmer in the fourth round. Speaking of skunks, it was previously reported that Terry Zahler had recently received his first ever skunk. After some intensive research, league records indicate this was fake news. Terry was skunked on at least two previous occasions, once during the 1976/77 season and again during the 1977/78 season. Nice try Terry.

Now for current news: Kleeman’s, fighting for a playoff spot, found themselves at the mercy of Eagle Heights. With the Eagles keen to feed their young, the Hay Shakers were quickly nabbed and regurgitated for a 35-point spread. Al Zimmerman and Jerry Judd (Kleeman’s) shook only 71 points out of the Eagles for this week’s low score. It was good to see Neal Fargo playing once again.
In Verona, Pipe Benders’ Tiny Zander and Ross Neshiem siphoned 110 points out of the Mounties leaving It’s Time high and dry, dismounting 12 points short of the bunkhouse. Just down the road, the 5th Quarter Shufflers were playing to win the second half of the season outright. Not leaving anything on the floor, the Shufflers jumped out to a 23-point lead over the Norsk Cowboys after the first round, and 70 after six. Stumbling a little in the last two rounds, 5th Quarter was still able to outpace the Cowboys by 52 points. Dave Herfel and Steve Vogt (Shufflers) were perfect going through seven, but fell victims to Tracy Thronson and Don Cleary in the eighth to finish with 113 points. Whereas, Tom Meyer and Stan Hook (Shufflers) loss both their fifth and eighth rounds by just one point each, finishing with this week’s high score of 118 points. With the win, the Shufflers won the second half of the season and will play the Hooterville Express in this year’s championship match to be held on March 15th. The time and place TBD, at the Spring Tournament.
Speaking of Hooterville, they were able to get the Express back on the winning track after loading 37 more points into the boxcar than the Norsk Pranksters could pull out of their bag of tricks. Hooterville left all the Pranksters standing on the platform waiting for the under 100-point train special, except Dean Herfel and Rodney Latham.
In New Glarus, the J&M Bar River Rats found the cheese platter before the S’wisco Taphaus Cheese Eaters leaving the Cheese Eaters 6 points short and winless this half. Therefore, keep an eye on your cheese wheelhouse as the Cheese Eaters will be looking to balk up over the summer for next season.

Second Half Final Standings: 5th Quarter 8-1; Hooterville Express 6-3; Kleeman’s 6-3; Norsk Cowboys 6-3; Eagle Heights 4-5; J&M Bar 4-5; Jones’ Plumbing 4-5; Norsk Pranksters 4-5; It’s Time 3-6; S’wisco Taphaus 0-9.
The Spring Tournament will be held on March 8, 2018, at 5th Quarter in Verona. Registration will start at 7:30 p.m., and play at 8:00 p.m. The tournament is opened to all current and former league players. The cost is $11.00 per person.
