Sugar River Euchre

In a match between the league’s rodents, the J&M Bar River Rats proved to be the bigger eaters. With Rats Jack Gehin and Dan (Honker) Palmer wheeling off with 115 lbs of cheese, and Jim Gehin and Ernie Sarbacker carving out another 112 lbs, the Cheese Eaters had little left to gnaw on. Not a single Cheese Eater was able to devour as much as 100 lbs of the New Glarus delicacy. The Rats ate 58 lbs more Swiss cheese than the Cheese Eaters.
In what was the most important match of the night, the second place Riley Shufflers traveled to Mount Horeb to take down the Norsk Cowboys, who were sitting in the first place saddle. With just two weeks left to play, the Shufflers needed a win to pull within a half a game of the Cowboys to keep their chances alive. Tom Meyer and Randy Skogen understood the importance of this match, and pulled in 116 points for the Shufflers (this week’s high score). However, there was apparently a breakdown in communications as the rest of the team was unable to find that 100-point mark. Ed Chancellor and Derek Skogen, barely reaching 78 points, grabbed this week’s low. Don Field and Roger Olstad roped 110 heifers for a 49-point win, thereby securing first place for the half and a chance to play in the championship match at the end of the season.
With the assistance of Dale Herfel and Karen Miller’s 112 rpms produced by their locomotive, plus the 111 rpms generated by Opie Taylor and John Scheidegger, the Harley Blue Express finally won their second match of the half. Their victims, the Norsk Pranksters - who started the year strong winning their first three matches - faltered again this week, losing for the third time in as many weeks. Chris Hook and Tom Schulenberg were magnificent, accumulating 103 points in their first seven games for the Pranksters. But with a quick turn of luck they picked up just 2 additional points in the eighth game as the Express pulled into the station 20 points ahead of the Pranksters.
Dave Hook and Harold Grabandt turned the wrenches against the Pipe Benders by apprehending 110 points towards the 32 arrest of the Jones’ Plumbing Pipe Benders, to lock up a Riley Mountie victory.
