Swiss UCC Raising Money to Build a Well in a Third World County

When Pat Pluss, worship leader at Swiss United Church of Christ, announced at the Bailey's Run drive-in service in early March that our church's big mission this year was to raise $15,000 to build a well in a third-world country, she already had $2,000 in donations. Since then, the Joyful Hearts Mission Committee has been hard at work recruiting walkers and donations.
This walk is a community-wide fundraiser hosted by Swiss Church. The World Vision Global 6K for Water walk/run is on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., beginning at the Village Park and continuing our 3.7 mile walk on Third Avenue and Durst Road.
Why 6K, you ask? That is the average distance children and women in third-world countries walk daily to find water, which is often dirty and disease ridden, for their families. For every $50 raised, one person will have a sustainable supply of clean water.
With clean water, children are better protected from disease and infection. More girls are free to go to school, and women can spend more time nurturing their children. Families can increase livestock production and grow vegetables year-round. Medical centers can operate safely, so people's overall health can improve. Communities can focus less on basic needs and more on programs that foster growth.
As of May 3rd, Global 6K for Water has raised $970,813 which means that 19,416 people will receive lasting clean water. The total amount raised in the 2020 6K was $1.8 million!
Registration is $50 for adults and $25 for youths under 18, and includes a Team World Vision tee shirt and race day bib. A different child in need is featured on each race bib, and your $50 provides clean water to one person. Dogs on leashes and child strollers are welcome, and you need not finish the entire 6K. You can turn around at any point.
There will be music before by Marc Barnaby, and after by Larry Daehn, along with freewill-offering walking tacos provided by the El Salvador Mission Committee.
