On Friday, February 10, 2017, at 2:20 p.m., the Green County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 911 report of a two-car accident at the intersection of Melvin and Clarno Roads, in Clarno Township, south of the City of Monroe.
Sheriff and Monroe First Response units arrived within minutes to render aid and extinguish a fire on one of the vehicles. Green County EMS was summoned to assist with multiple injured. Subsequently, Joseph T. Wyss, 15, Monroe, Anya T.L. Teasdale, 16, Monroe, and Jennifer L. Hopkins, 35, rural Monroe, were airlifted to the UW Hospital in Madison, while Gage P. Noble, 16, rural Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports indicate that a westbound sedan was traveling westbound on Melvin Road, when it failed to stop at the intersection, and collided with a northbound truck. Speed and failure to stop are considered factors for the sedan in the crash. The roads were closed for approximately six hours to permit investigation by Sheriff’s Deputies and the Wisconsin State Patrol Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit.
Anya T.L. Teasdale and Joseph T. Wyss succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased by UW Madison Hospital physicians on Saturday.
Jennifer L. Hopkins was discharged from the hospital on Monday, February 13th. Family and friends will be providing home care during her recovery from injuries sustained in the crash.
In the weeks ahead, sheriff’s personnel and WSP specialists will continue their investigation, however no charges are anticipated at this time. A critical incident debriefing for emergency response personnel was scheduled for Monday evening.
The Sheriff wants to thank everyone for the support given to the families and classmates at this difficult time. “We are all close-knit community and we share their grief. Tragedies of this proportion are rare, and it makes us stop our daily routines and reflect upon what is really important in life.”
This is Green County’s first fatal accident of 2017.
