Sugar River Euchre

With last week’s scheduled shootout between the 5 and 0 Norsk Cowboys and the 5 and 0 Kleeman Hay Shakers, it was a forgone conclusion that there would be but one team occupying first place after the results were recorded. The question was, which team would be top dog? Halfway through the match it was looking like the Hay Shakers could take that honor as they were up by 1. By the end of the seventh round, it was looking even better after adding another 4 points to their lead. But, in the eighth and final round, three of the four Cowboy couples won their games giving the Cowboys an 8-point win to claim sole possession of first place. The silver bullet for the Cowboys came from the guns of Don Field and Roger Olstad, who pulled the trigger on 110 points covering the poor shooting of teammates Dean Disch and Harold Schlimgen who missed the bullseye to end with this week’s low score of 75.
With the Cowboys now 6 and 0, and just three weeks left in the half, four teams are already looking forward to the second half. At the bottom of these outcasts are the Mounties from It’s Time Bar & Grill. In their match with the Cheese Eaters, It’s Time got their hands on the Klondike Bar for just one round, the third. After that it belonged to the Cheese Eaters. Who knew Brett and George Eichelkraut liked ice cream so much that they would steal 115 bars from the Mounties and help their fellow Cheese Eaters nibble out a 26-point victory, thereby keeping the Mounties in the cellar all alone? With this win, the Cheese Eaters have already tied the number of wins they had in the first half of last season. Wahoo!
Steve Hoffmaster and Steve Thoni lead Harley Blue, another struggling team, with 116 points for this week’s high score. But the weight of the other players was just too much for Steve and Steve to carry on their backs as the Express fell by just 6 points to the J&M Bar River Rats.
If you recall, last week the Shufflers had one heck of a total team score, 439 points. Unfortunately, that was not the case this week as no one from Riley, last year’s championship team, was able to break the 100-point barrier. The trickery of Dean Herfel and Dave Losenegger with 113 treats helped bag a 39-point win for the Pranksters.
