Help the Red Cross Overcome a Severe Blood Shortage

Right now, the American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. Donors of all blood types – especially type O – are urged to make an appointment to give as soon as possible to prevent further impact to patients.
Hospitals are currently seeing a higher number of emergency room visits, and when seconds count in trauma situations, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can make all the difference in lifesaving care. As people make summer plans after a challenging year, the Red Cross asks those who are eligible to make blood donation a summer activity that can help save lives.
The New Glarus Area EMS will be hosting a Blood Drive on Saturday, July 10, 2021, from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., at the station located at 401 3rd Street.
<strong>We need your help! </strong> Here are just a few ways you can help patients in need:
<strong>Make an appointment.</strong> Download the Blood Donor App, visit http://www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to schedule your blood or platelet donation appointment. Completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire found at http://www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification, are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Encourage others. Share with your social media contacts that you’re giving blood to help encourage your network to make an appointment.
