Jackson Family Helps Out Enlisted Personnel
June 14, 2018
Ben Kraemer and Airman Skylar West, US Navy, were each presented with a Commitment of Support on Sunday, June 3. The awards were given by the Benjamin David Jackson Memorial Fund and presented by Ben's parents, Larry and Jen Jackson, sister Emma, and brother Matthew.
The Fund is named after Ben Jackson, New Glarus High School Class of 2016, who passed away on April 13, 2018, while serving in the US Air Force as an Aerospace Propulsion Technician. Jackson, an Airman First Class, worked on F-16 engines in the 35th Maintenance Squadron at Misawa Air Base, Japan.
About seven weeks before he died, he surprised his family and friends with his first visit home in 14 months, and his first since arriving at his first permanent duty station in Japan. Ben's family and friends will always cherish memories of that visit.
Thanks to a large number of donors, and as a "Thank You" to the young men and women that have chosen to enlist in the US Military, the Benjamin David Jackson Memorial Fund provides financial assistance to help these young people visit family and friends while serving at their first military duty station, wherever that may be.
His parents commented that, "We owe a debt of gratitude to these young people, those who are not typically eligible for academic scholarships due to the path they have chosen. It is our hope that this small token of our appreciation and financial assistance will help make it possible for them to visit home."
West, New Glarus High School Class of 2017, enlisted in the Navy last year and went through basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois followed by Aviation Electrician training. He is currently stationed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in Pensacola, FL, and his permanent duty station will be NAS Lemoore in Lemoore, CA.
Kraemer, New Glarus High School Class of 2018, enlisted in the Navy in May and is scheduled to leave for basic training this summer. After basic training, he will be trained as a Master-at Arms, a law enforcement and security specialty, at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX.
