Knight Darris Schuett had 102 yards rushing with 16 carries in the game against Mauston on Friday, September 8th.

Friday, September 8th. The NGM squad took the long, road less traveled to play Mauston, a good team from the South Central Conference. The game itself was somewhat in jeopardy given the heavy flooding in the Mauston area the preceding days. The field drained, and the game was played on time with the end result a disappointing score of 35-10...the victory going to the home team.

Mauston set the tone early with its first series as they marched the ball the length of the field for a touchdown. Another quick score and it was suddenly 14-0 before the first hot dog had been consumed. Early in the second quarter, NGM answered with a solid 55 yard 12-play drive but was forced to settle for a Trent Sigafus field goal inside the red zone. The rest of the half was all Mauston as they ran off another touchdown and forced several NGM turnovers to take a 21-3 lead at halftime.

NGM rallied again in the third quarter with another prolonged drive, this one of 65 yards that resulted in a touchdown on the 14th play of the series. However, two more scores by the Golden Eagles proved to be too much, giving them the win this evening on their home field.

Thus the pre-season comes to a close. While NGM has posted a 1-3 record, it is noteworthy that all three setbacks have come against noticeably larger schools with very solid programs.

Leading NGM in rushing yards was Darris Schuett, with 102 yards rushing on 16 carries. Schuett also led the team in passing by going 9 of 23 for 97 yards and a touchdown. Trevor Gassman led NGM in receiving with three catches for 25 yards. Nathan Streiff caught two passes for 43 yards. Josh Wieser caught one pass for 6 yards.

Defensively, Pat Craker, Connor Siegenthaler and Nathan Streiff all had 10 tackles.

Conference play, which determines all playoff status, now begins this Friday as NGM travels to Belleville to take on the high scoring Wildcats. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
