Stock Learned a Lot While Attending Local Citizen's Academy

October 4, 2018

Dear Editor,

In the month of April, I seen a small ad in the newspaper. It read that the police departments of Belleville and New Glarus were holding a police citizen’s academy.

It seemed interesting, so I submitted my name to the department and awaited acceptance. I was surprised to find I was.

When the information arrived I was surprised to learn how many incredible sessions we would have. We covered introduction to law, toured the Dane County Jail and 911 Center; the officers also demonstrated defense and arrest tactics. We also learned active shooter skills and how to be aware of your surroundings.

We did have the opportunity to also drive police vehicles at the Columbus MATC track. That sure was a fun time.

An interesting activity was the CSI crime scene and evidence class. Nothing can be hidden from those folks. Our last session was firearms. What a learning experience that was.

The time invested was only 3-4 hours, one night a week. It would certainly benefit members of the communities to take interest in this academy. The information you are given during the academy is invaluable. It give you a new perspective on the work the law officers are performing. Turns out they don’t just drive around and issue traffic tickets.

I strongly urge citizens of Belleville and New Glarus to consider attending one of the academies offered.

Lee Stock,
