Sugar River Euchre

November 1, 2018

I neglected to print the low score for the week of October 18th in last week’s paper, and knowing that Kurt Beutel and Jim Gehin would be disappointed not to see their 73 printed, I figured it best to give them their rightful credit. As for this week, the match between the Riley Shufflers and the Jones’ Plumbing Pipe Benders generated this week’s low score. Benders Tiny Zander and Greg Stutz, caught in a nightmare, found themselves on the dark side of eleven loan-hands to end their gruesome night with an eerie 73 points. Absent their captain, it took the Shufflers a few games to shed their ghostly chains, but after a near skunk scare, they exhumed a 34-point victory out of the Pipe Benders.

In what could be described as a “Thriller” in Verona, the River Rats of J&M Bar gnawed their way out of the cellar when Jim Leon and Ernie Sarbacker grabbed their Halloween treats early, tricking the Mounties out of 117 points, giving the Rats their first win of the season. The 18-point win by the Rats left the Mounties in the cellar alone, afraid and calling for their mummy this Halloween week. I think a call to the Ghostbusters might be a quarter better spent by the Mounties.

In Mount Horeb, the Norsk Pranksters discovered it wasn’t easy to outmaneuver the Hay Shakers. Al Zimmerman and Rick Skindrud (Kleeman’s) lost only one game, their first, to Dave Losenegger and Jordy Schmitz to end the night with this week’s high score of 118 points. With none of the Pranksters able to get their brooms above the 100-point marker, and with Don Williams and Jeff Judd adding 114 points to the Hay Shakers’ brew, Kleeman’s remains undefeated with their 51-point flogging of the Pranksters. The Norsk Cowboys, the other team without a loss going into the night, kept the tie for first place alive with an execution of the Harley Blue Express. Dean Disch and Harold Schlimgen seized 113 points for an easy slaughter of the Express. A little sorcery during their bye week might see the rebirth of a mournful Express.

Standings: Kleeman’s 4-0; Norsk Cowboys 4-0; Riley 2-1; Norsk Pranksters 2-2; J&M Bar 1-2; S’Wisco Taphaus 1-2; Harley Blue Express 1-3; Jones’ Plumbing 1-3; It’s Time 0-3.

Schedule for November 1: Riley Shufflers @ It’s Time (7:00); Norsk Pranksters @ J&M Bar (8:00); Harley Blue – Bye; S’Wisco Taphaus @ Norsk Cowboys (7:30); Kleeman’s @ Jones Plumbing (8:00).
