Belleville Library Celebrates 140th Anniversary

November 22, 2018

Belleville Public Library invites the community to join us in celebrating 140 years of library use in Belleville on Sunday, December 2, 2018, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., at 130 S. Vine Street.

The celebration will include music by Squirrel Gravy from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Rosemary Ziehli and Bob Hoffman will be sharing stories from earlier times at the library and answering questions at 3:30 p.m. There will be a selfie photo booth and craft activities for all ages, including a library ornament, to make. The Friends of the Belleville Public Library will be serving cake and other refreshments.

Those with fond memories of Belleville’s library are encouraged to share a story with us. Pick up a “What is Your Library Story” sheet from the Library or tell your library story online at http://www.bellevillelibrary-wi.org/story.

Belleville’s long history of library use began when Henry and Mabel Story met with a few of their friends on November 28, 1878, to make plans to start a library association. The group gathered 130 books to form the Belleville Lyceum Library. As was common in that time, community members could purchase a library membership for $1.00 per year and the books were kept at a local store. Belleville was one of the earliest communities in the county and state to have a library for their residents.

In 1890, the Village agreed to take over annual support of the library. It was recognized that the library was growing rapidly and needed a new home. In 1895, the library moved into the second floor of what we now call the Old Library building in Library Park, where it stayed until 1979. The current location has housed the Belleville Public Library since then. Plans are underway to build a new, larger library at 20 S. Park Street, across from the original Old Library location.
