Belleville's CC Grefsheim (#11) slides in safe while Monticello's Mia Brokopp (#4) attempts to tag her out.

The Belleville Wildcats softball team played their first game of the season against Nekoosa on April 2nd. They ended up losing, 5-6.

"Had the game in the bag. Then the 7th inning came and it fell apart," said Coach Connie Wunschel. "Maddy Weber pitched the full 7 innings, taking the hard fought loss. It was a true pitchers battle all the way through."

Going into the bottom of the 5th, it was tied 1-1. With 2 outs, Kori Rogers walked, Ella Campbell squib hit one to 3rd and while Nekoosa's 3rd baseman was attempting to throw it to 1st, Rogers slid into 3rd base with Campbell moving to 2nd. Bailey Legler was walked to load the bases and CC Grefsheim knocked in two runs with a hard hit up the middle.

" So at this point, the score was us 3-1 going into the top of the 7th. That's when the wheels fell off - we committed three physical errors and a couple mental errors all in that half inning to give them the lead," said Wunschel. "We had 2 outs and the bottom of the order up. Maddy got the girl swinging, but the ball hit the ground and no play was made on the runner. The next batter had a base shot to score a run. Then a dropped fly ball led to two more runs. An error on a throw got past first base and they scored a couple more. We ended their at bat when after a wild pitch we made a play on the runner at home."

The Wildcats scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th.

"Highlight of the game - they had only one stolen base against us as Ella and Bailey combined to throw out runners at second twice and Ella and Jillian got a runner at 3rd," said Wunschel.

Maddy Weber faced 33 on the mound, walked four, struck out eight, gave up six runs - two earned.

Jillian Michaels went 3x4, 1 run scored, stolen base and a triple. Kori Rogers reached base 2 of 4 times, scoring both of those times. CC Grefsheim was 2x4, with 2 RBI. Jenna Shrader also had a hit, with 1 RBI.

On Friday, April 5th, the Wildcats hosted the Monticello Ponies and won 11-4.

"Monticello gave us a scare as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after their first two times at bat," commented Wunschel. "They came out swinging and our girls were not ready."

Monticello's Lindsey Pence hit a base hit down right field, and Alexa Siegenthaler then smashed a run-scoring triple to right center; Siegenthaler then scored on a Claire Klossner bunt.

The Wildcats scored 2 in the bottom of the 2nd. Callie Everson moved to first after being hit by a pitch then moved around the diamond on two passed balls. Abby Winterburn walked and stole 2nd and Jillian Michaels got a base hit which scored Everson and Winterburn. The Ponies tacked on 1 more run in the top of the 7th.

Maddy Weber pitched the entire game, striking out 10 and walking 2. Weber gave up 6 hits and 2 earned runs.

Belleville's 5 hits came from Jillian Michaels, Ella Campbell, Bailey Legler and Abby Winterburn who had 2 hits. Winterburn went 2x3, scoring twice and knocking in 3 RBI. Callie Everson got on base all three times she was at bat.

On April 6th, the Wildcats played Evansville, winning 8-6.

"Ugly game," said Wunschel. "Not sure how we pulled it off. Big story for us was the 7 errors we committed. Good thing they committed 5! The pitching and defense was sharp the first 5 innings, only committing 3 errors, but none of that really hurt us. But in the 6th and 7th, we made 4 more errors which helped make the game a bit too close."

Belleville scored 3 runs in the first 2 innings of the game and at the bottom of the 5th Bailey Legler reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a base hit from CC Grefsheim and Jenna Shrader to load the bases. Maddy Weber walked for an RBI, Callie Everson reached on an error to score and Abby Winterburn hit one down the line to left to score 2 more runs. The Wildcats were ahead 7-2. Ella Campbell scored off a grounder by CC Grefsheim.

Maddy Weber pitched the game, striking out 5, walking 2, giving up 7 hits and 2 earned runs.

Ella Campbell went 2x4, scoring 2 runs. Bailey Legler was 2x4, scoring 1 run and driving in 1 RBI. Jenna Shrader went 2x4, scoring 2 runs. Callie Everson and Abby Winterburn each had 2 RBI.

Also on Saturday, the Wildcats played Juda/Albany, winning 10-8.

"This was a close one all the way," said Wunschel. "We had 10 hits to their 7 and commited one less error than they did. Problem was, we committed 2 of our 4 errors in the very first inning, which led J/A to a 3-0 lead right off the bat."

A base hit by J/A led to a stolen base and Weber hit the batter. The next batter bunted and the throw was missed at first allowing a runner to score and the other runner to move to 3rd. J/A then stole a base, which, along with an error, allowed two more runners to score.

The Wildcats fought back, Jillian Michaels got a base hit and stole 2nd while Ella Campbell hit to left field to score Michaels. Kori Rogers hit one up the middle for the runners at 1st and 2nd, but Bailey Legler's grounder forced Campbell out at 3rd. Rogers and Legler moved bases on a passed ball and CC Grefsheim hit a ground out to score Rogers and Legler scored on the next at bat on a passed ball to tie the game up at 3-3.

In the 4th inning, J/A went ahead by 3 and the Wildcats answered with 2 in the bottom of the 4th, 2 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th.

"We were able to play some very good defense with some great pitching to only allow them one more run in the 6th. CC made a really great catch in short center field, and Bailey was able to get an interference call by getting run into by their runner. Bailey and Ella connected to stop a stolen base at 2nd in the 6th and Raina made a good catch on a liner to 2nd in the 7th to almost have a double play!" said Wunschel.

Maddy Weber pitched all 7 innings, striking out 4, walking 3, giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs and no extra base hits.

Jillian Michaels was 2x4, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base. Ella Campbell was 2x4, 1 run scored and 2 RBI. Kori Rogers went 4x4, 3 runs scored, 1 stolen base. In her first varsity start, Raina Nichols went 2x3 with 1 run scored, 2 RBI and 1 double. Bailey Legler was on base twice, scored twice and had 3 RBI.

"We are on a 3 game winning streak! Has been a while since I was able to say that!" exclaimed Coach Wunschel.

The Wildcats played at New Glarus on April 9th, will host Cambridge on April 11th and will play at Marshall on April 13th.
