Green County Sees First Traffic Fatality of 2019

April 18, 2019

On Monday, April 15, 2019, at approximately 1:09 a.m., Green County dispatch received a report of a single vehicle crash on CTH P, several hundred feet east of STH 69. The lone occupant of the vehicle was reported to be unresponsive and the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Deputies, along with Green County EMS and Monroe Fire Department personnel, responded to the scene.

Monroe Fire Department personnel extinguished the vehicle fire and the driver, 30-year-old Kyle L. Gumtow, Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Green County Coroner. Initial investigation revealed that a Ford automobile was eastbound on CTH P, left the roadway on the north side and collided nearly head-on with a large tree. The vehicle was damaged extensively and towed from the scene. At the time of this report it is unknown if the driver was wearing a safety belt.

The Green County Highway Department responded to barricade the road while the crash investigation was underway. Speed was a contributing factor and the crash remains under investigation. This incident is Green County’s first traffic fatality in 2019.

Jeff Skatrud, Green County Sheriff
