The History of Photographic Formats to be Topic for GCGS Meeting

July 25, 2019

On Saturday, August 3rd, the Green County Genealogical Society welcomes Simone Munson, Archivist and Librarian at the Wisconsin Historical Society, to speak on the History of Photographic Formats: Date and Identify Images. Simone Munson worked closely with the Society’s photographic collections for over 10 years. A picture is worth 1,000 words, but often those words are difficult to read. Simone Munson will present tips and tools for photo identification. She will provide a brief history of photographic formats and a deeper examination of resources, tools and strategies for dating and identifying photographs. If you have inherited a collection of unidentified family photographs, this presentation will provide information for tackling this daunting project.

The Green County Genealogical Society meeting will be held in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Refreshments are available for 15 minutes before the meeting. Visitors are always welcome and there is no cost to attend. You may call Sharon Mitchell at (815) 868-2416, or Donna Kjendlie at (608) 921-1537, if you have questions. Please leave a message if we are unable to answer.

The GCGS Research Center (located in lower level of the Monroe Public Library) is available to the public for research. Normal Research Center hours are Tuesdays and the third Saturday of the month, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and the first Saturday after the meeting from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.; or by appointment by calling (608) 921-1537. Main holdings are on Green County. Both Rock and Lafayette Counties are well represented, as well as several other counties, states, countries, and ethnic groups. A large clipping collection of births, marriages and obituaries is available. Volunteers are on staff to help with your research.
