Belleville Comes Up Short Vs Cambridge

October 10, 2019

For the 4th consecutive year, the game between the Belleville Wildcats and the Cambridge Bluejays came down to the last possession to determine a winner. This time, it was the Bluejays who found themselves on the good end of the 14-7 final score and took a commanding lead in the Capitol South with a 2-0 conference record.

The game was a defensive battle, a common theme for Belleville this season, with teams able to move the ball at times but unable to sustain long scoring drives. The Bluejays scored first on an interception of Wildcat quarterback Trevor Syse that was returned for a touchdown. A few drives later the Wildcats responded with a 40-yard punt return from Jaxon Pier down to the Bluejay 6-yard line. Two plays later, Sawyer Fahey plunged in from 2 yards out and the score was tied. Cambridge scored before the end of the half on a 34-yard screen pass to running back Tyler Curtis and 14-7 was the score heading to the locker room.

The second half saw a lot of short drives from both teams and both defenses stepping up to make big plays at key moments. With less than 10 seconds left in the game, Syse’s desperate heave to the end zone was intercepted as time expired.

With a 4-3 record, the Wildcats head home for Homecoming this week and welcome the Pec-Argyle Vikings; kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
