Sugar River Euchre

October 10, 2019

With the 89th Sugar River Euchre League in full gear, I think it only fitting that we pay tribute to one of the League’s greatest Euchre players of all time, Benny Goebler. As League Secretary for approximately 50 years, he was instrumental in keeping the league running smoothly. He recorded individual weekly scores, wrote news articles, ran the winter and spring tournaments and kept a well-documented history of the league. He also enjoyed sending out those famous skunk cards. Thank you for all you did Benny, we will miss you.

In the first week of play, Tom Magnuson and Harold Grabandt were riding high in their saddles at their new home in Riley when they secured 118 points for the Mounties (tied for this week’s high score). Rick Skindrud and Jeff Judd were the culprits that held Tom and Harold back from a full gallop, allowing them just 13 points in the first game of the night. Not to be outdone, Curt Herfel and Leo Humphrey rounded-up an additional 114 points for the Mounties giving the Mounties a 21-point victory over the Hay Shakers. The match between Jones’ Plumbing and Harley Blue produced the other score of 118 points plumbed in by Jerome Krantz and Greg Stutz. This was enough of an edge for the Pipe Benders to sink the Express by 10 points.

The Pranksters pulled one over on J&M Bar with a 39-point win. But that was nothing compared to the wool Larry Losenegger and Rodney Latham, with 116 points, pulled over on Jack and Jimmy Gehin when Larry and Rodney issued the Gehins the first skunk of the season and low score for the week, an 84. Speaking of skunks, I heard Marvin Thompson and Steve Dower (Norsk Cowboys) barely escaped a skunk in their game with Kendal Wenger and Brett Eichelkraut. Kendal and Brett were busy playing the spoilers, as they also kept Harold Schlimgen and Ferdie Schmitz from earning a perfect score. However, Harold and Ferdie still were able to corral 115 points to secure a 32-point Cowboy win over the Cheese Eaters.

Standings: Jones’ Plumbing 1-0; Norsk Cowboys 1-0; Norsk Pranksters 1-0; Riley Mounties 1-0; Riley 0-0; Harley Blue Express 0-1; J&M Bar 0-1; Kleeman’s 0-1; S’Wisco Taphaus 0-1.

Schedule for October 10: Harley Blue @ Norsk Cowboys (7:30); Jones’ Plumbing @ Riley Shufflers (7:00); Norsk Pranksters @ Kleeman’s (8:00); Riley Mounties @ J&M Bar (8:00); S’Wisco Taphaus - Bye.
