Ponies Defeat Vikings

December 5, 2019

The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team opened up their season with a game at Parkview on November 26th. The Ponies, leading by only 2 at the half, won the game 85-68.

In the first half, the game was tied four different times but the Ponies held on to lead by 2 at the half. In the second half, the Ponies went on a 10-0 run to go up by 11 early on and the Vikings never caught back up.

“We got behind early thanks to some hot shooting from Parkview and a few bad possessions against their press,” said Coach Mark Olson. “Once we settled down, we were able to get easier shots against their press and challenge their shooters a little better. We fought our way back to a lead by halftime and eventually put the game away by forcing some turnovers that turned into easier baskets later in the second half.”

Peter Gustafson led Monticello with 35 points and 8 rebounds, while Reece Rufer scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds and Simon Blohowiak scored 8 points and had 4 rebounds.

On December 2nd the Ponies won over the New Glarus Knights. The Ponies will hit the road to play at Madison Country Day School on December 5th and at Belmont on December 7th.
