Bryan Gadow, who was the New Glarus Village Administrator since 2015, accepted the position as City Administrator and Economic Development Director for the City of Monona. Gadow's appointment was approved by the Monona City Council and the New Glarus Village Board accepted his resignation. His last day in New Glarus was January 3, 2019.
The 33rd Annual Winter Fest R&R All Veterans Reunion, held January 17-20, 2019, welcomed Veterans from around the nation, taking place in New Glarus. This is the first veterans reunion of the year in the nation.
Three New Glarus teachers were learned that they achieved National Board Certification, one of the teaching profession's highest marks of achievement. Kari Hedeman and Josie Wieser achieved certification in the category of Generalist/Early Childhood, and Lexa Speth achieved certification in the category of Social Studies-History/Early Adolescence.
Emma Eicher and Jessiah (Jesse) Tetner, 2018 graduates of New Glarus High School, each received a check for $1,000 from the Alvin Ott Scholarship Fund. Emma is attending University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Microbiology. Jesse is also attending University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying Business.
The New Glarus Public Library Board announced that the Town of New Glarus Library Matching Grant surpassed the $100,000 goal! As of December 28, 2018, $104,038 had been raised to support the construction of the new library.
Carey Schneider, representing New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, presented $1,000 scholarships to Zachery Frick, Jared Carney and Matthew Jackson. Zachery is attending UW-River Falls, Jared is attending UW-Platteville and Matthew is attending UW-Milwaukee.
New Glarus Brewing Company was announced as one of the Top 10 Best Brewers in the World for the year 2018 as part of RateBeer Best. New Glarus Brewing Company was named number 8, and was the only brewery in Wisconsin to make the Top 10. In addition to naming the brewery to the Top 10 Best Brewers, a number of the beers produced also received Top 10 and Top 100 honors. In Best Beer by Style, was Mistral (#12); Specialty #3 Raspberry Tart (Gold); #4 Belgian Red (Gold); #6 Serendipity (Silver); In Low/Moderate Alcohol (under 4.6% ABV) #1 Raspberry Tart (Gold), and #2 WI Belgian Red (Gold).
The annual Spelling Bee was held Thursday, January 24th, in the New Glarus Middle School MPR. The Spelling Bee Champion was Marissa Russell and Second Place Winner was Lola Endicott.
Peter Etter was chosen to represent New Glarus on the cover of the 2019 Visitor Guide. Etter was recognized for all that he has done and continues to do for New Glarus. School Superintendent, Museum Tour Guide, President of the Swiss Historical Museum, Step-On Bus Guide, German Wilhelm Tell Performer, Festival Volunteer and so much more.
The New Glarus Library Board announced the hiring of a new Director for the New Glarus Public Library. People were invited to stop by the library and welcome Holly Lague, who began her position the week of February 4th.
Nine students from the New Glarus Middle School participated in the school-level competition of the National Geographic GeoBee on January 24, 2019. Roman Kendrick, an eighth grade student, won first place for the second year in a row. Emma Mondloch and Michelangelo O'Brien, both sixth grade students, took second and third places.
On February 2nd, the Sugar River Wrestling Team participated in the annual Capitol Conference Tournament at Poynette High School. The Raiders finished second as a team to Lodi, with all participants finishing in the top five. Two Raider Wrestlers won individual championships, Robert Chenoweth at 145 and Danny Enloe at 285.
Several children sold lemonade at the New Glarus Firefest in 2018, to raise money for the New Glarus Fire Department's Building Fund. The kids raised $200 and recently presented a check to the New Glarus Fire Department.
On Wednesday, February 13th, Matt Hach, New Glarus, signed his national Letter of Intent to join the men's golf team at Madison College next year.
For the third year in a row, the New Glarus Knights boys basketball team won the Conference Championship.
For the first time in five years, more than one Sugar River wrestler qualified for the WIAA Individual State wrestling tournament. Both Joe Quaglia and Danny Enloe wrestled Thursday, February 21st, at the Kohl Center in Madison.
On Friday, February 15th, New Glarus Middle and High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members headed to Oregon High School to compete in the FCCLA Regional Competition. Seventeen New Glarus FCCLA Members competed, and all seventeen competitors advanced to the State FCCLA Leadership Convention that was held April 8th-10th, in Wisconsin Dells. Twelve students earned gold medals and five earned silver medals. The FCCLA members that participated were Keatan Zimmerman (Chapter Service Project Display), Sutton Zimmerman (Children's Literature), Megan Peterson (Chapter Service Project Display), Melanie Fink (Chapter Service Project Display), Isabella Mancusi (Chapter Service Project Display), Allison Baker (Children's Literature), Emma Holland (Focus on Children), Kendra Wenger (Wild Game Fabrication), Dee Delforge (Illustrated Talk), Kortney Peterson (Regional Representative and Chapter Service Project Display), Alexa Thayer (Chapter Service Project Display), Maddie Deegan (Recycle and Redesign), Haiden Zimmerman (FCCLA State Officer and Chapter Service Project Display), Annelisa Smith (Chapter Service Project Display), Bronwyn Mayhew (Culinary Creations), Tyler Durst (Culinary Creations), Abby Marty (Career Investigation).
Two wrestlers participated in the 2019 WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament. Sugar River's Danny Enloe, a senior, placed sixth at the 2019 WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament. Sugar River sophomore Joe Quaglia wrestled at the 2019 WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament, ending his season with a loss in his first match.
New Glarus girls won over Waterloo in the first round of Regional play on February 22, but lost to Markesan on February 23, 2019.
The New Glarus Knights earned the Regional Title after defeating Mineral Point on Saturday, March 2nd.
At a ceremony held on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Hans Eric Becklin was ordained as a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He is the son of Katherine Becklin of Monona, and the late Jay Becklin. He is the grandson of Elizabeth Johnson, formerly of Argyle and New Glarus, and the late Mac Johnson. He is married to Marissa Becklin. He has been called to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kissel Hill, Lititz, PA.
Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW) is pleased to name Kristin Lueschow, RN, MSN, as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
Employees of The Bank of New Glarus® and Sugar River Bank Branches recently braved the cold weather and took the Polar Plunge in nothing but shorts, t-shirts, and tutus, jumping into a cut-out section of a frozen part of Lake Monona. After combining the number of donations solicited by the bank with the amount donated by the bank itself, they were able to donate a total amount of $2,325.00 to Special Olympics Wisconsin.
The #2 seeded New Glarus Glarner Knights hosted #7 Luther on Friday, March 1st. The final score was New Glarus 84, Luther 47. Friday night's win earned the Knights the chance to play #3 Mineral Point – who, earlier in the season, handed the Knights one of their only two losses. The Knights won the game, 68-57.
For the first time since 1932, the New Glarus Knights Boys Basketball team was headed to State! The New Glarus Knights won the Sectional Championship on Saturday, March 9, 2019, after winning the Sectional Final game against the Belleville Wildcats. On March 16, 2019, the New Glarus Glarner Knights capped off the first visit to state in 87 years by winning the 2019 Division 4 State Championship! It seemed as if the entire village of New Glarus celebrated with the team! The team was escorted into town by the New Glarus Fire Department, and a congratulations rally was held at the High School.
The New Glarus High School presented the musical "The Pirates of Penzance" on Friday, March 22nd, Saturday, March 23rd, and Sunday, March 24th.
In March, a contractor hired by the village removed a number of diseased and structurally hazardous trees. Additionally, the village public works department removed sixteen of the downtown trees.
The New Glarus Chamber of Commerce welcomed its new Executive Director, Bekah Stauffacher. Born and raised in Monroe, WI, Stauffacher attended UW-Madison and has worked in the tourism industry since 2008. Previously with Destination Madison, she has a strong background in events and visitor services.
Jaden Kreklow, New Glarus High School senior, was selected to play in the Wisconsin basketball coaches association (WBCA] All-Star games at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells on June 15th and 16th.
On Friday, March 22nd, 10 of the 13 Sugar River youth wrestlers took to the mats at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. It was a HUGE DAY for the boys and coaches, as six came home placing in the TOP 5 or better in their corresponding 16 man brackets!
Amvets Post 69 of New Glarus received a plaque from the Wisconsin Amvets organization to recognize Francis Beers and his contributions to all veterans. Beers gifted money to Amvets Wisconsin hospital fund from his estate. Francis Beers was a founding member of Post 69, which is located in New Glarus.
New Glarus Family and Consumer Science Teacher Julie Martin received a Kohl Teacher Fellowship Award at a ceremony held on March 24th. Teacher Fellowship Award recipients are educators who have been chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.
In March, New Glarus High School senior Jaden Kreklow was selected to play in the Division 4 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star Game. The All-Star Game was on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
The New Glarus Area EMS, New Glarus Police Department, and New Glarus Fire Department were presented with donations from the New Glarus Lions to support the operation of these first responders.
New Glarus Utilities invited children ages 4-12 to participate in the Thank-A-Lineworker Kids Coloring Contest in celebration of National Lineworker Appreciation Day on April 18, 2019. Those who entered had a chance to win a Visa gift card for showing off their artistic abilities.
On April 10th, Shirley Lewis, representing the Women's Winter Fest Committee, presented the New Glarus Area EMS with a donation check for over $1,000. Each year, the Winter Fest committee holds a silent auction during the January Winterfest event in New Glarus. The women of the two sponsoring organizations, Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Chapter 3 and New Glarus VFW Post 10549, use their portion of the proceeds to donate to various community and Veteran organizations.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, in cooperation with Rural Mutual Insurance, has chosen the recipients of the team sportsmanship awards for the 2019 Winter State Tournaments. Among the winners of the prestigious sportsmanship recognition were New Glarus in boys basketball.
On Monday, April 22, 2019, New Glarus students gathered in the high school gym for a "Special Assembly." High School Principal Dr. Jeff Eichelkraut then introduced NBC 15 News Anchor Leigh Mills, who spoke about the Crystal Apple Award. This year, they had received over 500 nominations. The students enthusiastically complied, cheering so loud that the winner, Fran Zimmerman, didn't hear her name!
Drake Daily has begun his new job as the Village Administrator for New Glarus. Daily graduated from UW-Madison with a BA in Political Science and History and graduated from Robert A. Lafollette School of Public Affairs with a Master's Degree in Public Affairs, Public Policy and Management.
New Glarus Middle and High School FCCLA chapters attended the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Wisconsin Dells from Monday, April 8th-Wednesday, April 10th. There were a total of 16 students in attendance from New Glarus Middle and High School. New Glarus was lucky enough to have Haiden Zimmerman represent as the 2018-2019 Wisconsin FCCLA State President. Abigail Marty was elected to become the 2019-2020 Wisconsin FCCLA Vice President of Competitive Events.
