Undefeated Ponies Rack Up Two More Wins

Peter Gustafson had 28 points and 7 rebounds in Monday night's win over Belleville.

The undefeated Monticello Ponies boys basketball team hosted Belleville on January 6th to a gym packed with loyal fans from both towns. Leading by a slim 5 points at the half, Monticello held on and won the game. The final score was Monticello 63, Belleville 54.

The first half was close throughout with Belleville biggest lead being 2 points and Monticello's at 7 points. The second half was more of the same - the Ponies only outscored the Wildcats by 4 points.

"Monday we had a Highway 69 showdown with Belleville. A big crowd turned out to see a quality match-up and to support a local family," commented Coach Mark Olson. "By halftime we were able to hold on to a 5-point lead. In the second half, we did a nice job against their aggressive zone and were able to score a few baskets in transition that helped us push closer to a 10-point differential."

Leading the way for Monticello was Peter Gustafson, with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Reece Rufer added 8 points and 9 rebounds and Simon Blohowiak and Devin Holtz each scored 7 points, with Blohowiak pulling down 9 rebounds.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Trevor Syse with 22 points, he also had 11 rebounds. Sawyer Fahey scored 10 points and Kody Fahey put 8 on the board with 5 rebounds.

On Thursday, January 9th, the Ponies hosted the Albany Comets. The Ponies galloped out of the locker room and jumped out to a 28-0 lead right away and never looked back. Leading by 42 at the half, 55-13, the Ponies went on to win it 83-36.

"I thought our half-court defense was sound, we were able to speed them up a little bit, and we got out and played well on the break," said Coach Olson.

Reece Rufer scored 25 points and pulled down 9 rebounds for Monticello, while Peter Gustafson scored 21 points with 6 rebounds, Simon Blohowiak put 12 on the board and had 8 rebounds, Devin Holtz scored 11 points and Rudy Wicker pulled down 4 rebounds.

On January 14th, the Ponies played at Black Hawk and they will host Pecatonica on January 17th and Dodgeville on January 21st. The Ponies are now 10-0 overall, 4-0 in conference.
